USA: As corona cases surge, rural areas seeing increases as well

Washington, Jun 27 (AP/PTI) For many states and counties in the U.S., the dark days of the coronavirus pandemic in April unfolded on their television screens, not on their doorsteps.

But now, some places that appeared to have avoided the worst are seeing surges of infections, as worries shift from major cities to rural areas.

US says considering new taxes on $3.1 bn in European products

WASHINGTON/BRUSSELS, June 27 (NNN-AGENCIES) — The United States is considering levying taxes on an additional $3.1 billion in European imports amid a dispute over subsidies to plane maker Airbus.

A document released Tuesday from the US Trade Representative (USTR) listed products from France, Germany, Spain or Britain, ranging from olives to decaffeinated coffee, as possibly subject to the new tariffs.

USA: House adopts bill to make DC 51st state; Senate GOP opposes

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Democratic-controlled House approved a bill Friday to make the District of Columbia the 51st state, saying Congress has both the moral obligation and constitutional authority to ensure that the city’s 700,000 residents are allowed full voting rights, no longer subject to “taxation without representation.″

Lawmakers approved the bill, 232-180, largely along party lines, marking the first time a chamber of Congress has passed a D.C. statehood bill. Minnesota Rep. Collin Peterson was the sole Democrat to oppose the bill. No Republican voted for it.

US Senate approves sanctions Bill over Hong Kong

WASHINGTON, June 26 (NNN-AGENCIES) — The US Senate unanimously approved a Bill that would lay out sanctions on Chinese officials who undermine Hong Kong’s autonomy as Beijing pushes forward with a controversial security law.

The House of Representatives still needs to pass the Bill, which would allow sanctions in the United States against Chinese officials and the Hong Kong police as well as banks that do business with them.

The U.S. recorded a one-day total of 34,700 new COVID-19 cases, the highest in two months, according to the count kept by Johns Hopkins University.

US sanctions five Iranian ship captains over Venezuela oil delivery

WASHINGTON, June 25 (NNN-AGENCIES) — The United States sanctioned five Iranian ship captains who delivered oil to Venezuela, as Washington ratcheted up pressure against President Nicolas Maduro, whose government it considers illegitimate.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that the Iranian-flagged oil tankers, which delivered some 1.5 million barrels of gasoline and oil to Venezuela in recent weeks, had been placed on the US Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) blacklist.

US designates four more Chinese official media outlets as 'foreign missions'

Washington, Jun 23 (PTI) The US has designated four more top state-run Chinese media houses as "foreign missions," terming them as "propaganda" outlets "controlled" by the ruling Communist Party of China, a move that could further escalate tensions between the two countries.

The four Chinese media outlets designated as foreign missions on Monday are China Central Television, China News Service, the People's Daily and the Global Times, taking the total number to nine.
