New Delhi, Oct 4 (PTI) The government is weighing its legal options after losing the high-profile international tax arbitration case against Vodafone as it looks to limit damages not just in this matter but also in case of a separate lawsuit with Cairn Energy goes against it.

India: Band business facing tough days owing to Covid

Kanpur: As many as 25 Band Groups in the city have lost its business during the last eight months owing to the Corona. The operators are said to be on the verge of starvation. Their trollies are not moving. Even though the poor condition of ghodi (mare) & Bagghi (Coach) suppliers are also terribly gone worse presently.

It has also been reported that the band team has not been getting any fresh order or booking during these scary months owing to vague guidelines, as the band owners maintain.

Pompeo shortens Asia trip; to visit only Japan

Washington, Oct 4 (PTI) US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will travel to Tokyo to attend the second ministerial meeting of the four countries under the Quad -- India, Japan, Australia and US -- but will not go to Mongolia and South Korea as originally planned, the State Department has said.

Pompeo was scheduled to visit Japan, Mongolia and South Korea between October 4 and October 8.

India: TPG to invest Rs 1837.5 crore in Reliance Retail

New Delhi, Oct 3 (PTI) Global alternative asset firm TPG will invest Rs 1,837.5 crore to buy 0.41 per cent stake in Reliance Retail Ventures Limited (RRVL), the retail arm of Reliance Industries, a statement by the Indian firm said on Saturday.

This investment values Reliance Retail at a pre-money equity value of Rs 4.285 lakh crore.

TPG's investment will translate into a 0.41 per cent equity stake in RRVL on a fully diluted basis, it said.

India: PM Modi inaugurates world's longest highway tunnel

Rohtang (HP), Oct 3 (PTI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday inaugurated the strategically important all-weather Atal Tunnel, which reduces the distance between Manali and Leh by 46 km and the travel time by four to five hours, at Rohtang in Himachal Pradesh.

Atal Tunnel, built by the Border Roads Organisation, is the longest highway tunnel in the world.

Turkey added to UK’s quarantine list

02 Oct 2020; MEMO: Turkey was added to the UK’s coronavirus quarantine list, meaning travellers will have to self-isolate for two weeks on their return to the kingdom, the Department for Transport (DfT) announced last night.

The new legislation comes into effect for people arriving in the UK after 4 am on Saturday.

Meanwhile, an estimated 10,000 British holidaymakers in Turkey face a choice between paying  for an immediate flight home, or spending two weeks in isolation upon their return.

UAE fined by US for violating Iran no-fly-zone

02 Oct 2020; MEMO: The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has been fined $400,000 by the US Transportation Department for violating a ban on flying in Iranian airspace, including areas over the Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, which was introduced during heightened political tension between Washington and Tehran last year.

Half of the fine will be waived if Emirates airline avoids similar violations for a year.

Protesters storm Beirut bank, demand return of savings

30 Sep 2020; MEMO: Protesters stormed a bank in the Downtown district of Beirut yesterday and staged a sit-in, demanding the institution return their savings which have been trapped since late last year, Lebanon’s National News Agency (NNA) reported.

Hundreds of thousands of bank account holders have been unable to access their entire savings since November, when the country’s financial institutions imposed informal restrictions, limiting withdrawals to meagre weekly sums.

India: Custom-made B777 plane for VVIP travel arrives

New Delhi, Oct 1 (PTI) A custom-made B777 aircraft, which will be used to fly the president, vice president and prime minister, has arrived in Delhi from the US on Thursday, said government officials.

The plane was scheduled to be delivered by aircraft manufacturer Boeing to Air India in July but its delivery was delayed twice - once in July for a few weeks due to COVID-19 pandemic and then in August for a few weeks due to technical reasons - the officials noted.
