India: Govt needs to spend more, not lend more: Rahul Gandhi

New Delhi, Aug 26 (PTI) Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday attacked the government over the state of the economy and said it needs to give money to the poor to restart the economy through consumption.

Gandhi said "distractions" through media won't help the poor or make the "economic disaster disappear".

UAE, Israel health ministers agree to enhance cooperation on health

25 Aug 2020; MEMO: The United Arab Emirates and Israel on Monday agreed to enhance bilateral cooperation in the health sector following an accord between the countries to normalise relations 10 days ago, UAE state news agency WAM said.

The health ministers of the two countries discussed cooperation on pharmaceuticals, medical research, and COVID-19 in a telephone call. A statement from Israel’s Health Ministry added that they agreed on “initial and immediate cooperation” in the health sector.

China, US discuss economic coordination in trade meeting

BEIJING (AP) — U.S. and Chinese trade envoys discussed strengthening coordination of their countries’ economic policies during a phone meeting Tuesday, the Ministry of Commerce announced.

The announcement gave no details of the meeting held as part of the “Phase 1” truce aimed at ending a tariff war between the two biggest global economies that has disrupted worldwide trade.

Singapore govt, monetary authority trim stake in Zee Entertainment

New Delhi, Aug 24 (PTI) The Singapore government and Monetary Authority of Singapore have cut almost one per cent of their total holding in Zee Entertainment Enterprise (ZEEL) to 5.93 per cent by selling shares worth over Rs 186 crore in the open market.

According to a regulatory filing by the company, GIC Pvt Ltd on account of Government of Singapore (GOS) and Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) sold a total of 93.30 lakh shares, amounting to approximately 0.97 per cent stake in ZEEL on August 20.

Russia signs contract with Turkey on 2nd batch of S-400 air defense systems

MOSCOW, August 23. /TASS/: A contract on the delivery of the second batch of S-400 anti-aircraft missile systems to Turkey has been signed and the sides are discussing the contract’s financial terms, Head of Russia’s state arms seller Rosoboronexport Alexander Mikheyev told reporters on Sunday.

"The contract has been signed," the chief executive said, replying to the corresponding question.

The sides are now discussing "the financial arrangement of implementing the contract," he specified.

Maduro: Venezuela buying Iranian missiles 'a good idea'

23 Aug 2020; MEMO: Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro on Saturday said it would be a “good idea” to look into buying missiles from Iran, a day after Colombia said Venezuela was considering such a plan amid growing ties between Caracas and Tehran, Reuters reports.

Iran in May supplied gasoline to Venezuela to ease chronic shortages, triggering alarm bells in Washington as the two countries expand trade relations amid efforts to undermine aggressive U.S. sanctions programs.

Turkey's natural gas find hailed internationally

22 Aug 2020; MEMO: Palestine, Azerbaijan and Ukraine congratulated Turkey on Saturday for its discovery of major natural gas reserves in the Black Sea, Anadolu Agency reports.

Palestine’s President Mahmoud Abbas congratulated Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in a phone call, Turkey’s Communications Directorate said in a statement.

He hailed Turkey’s success as Palestine’s success, while Erdogan reiterated Ankara’s support for the Palestinian cause.

India: Delhi govt brings in amnesty scheme for factory owners

New Delhi, Aug 22(PTI) In a bid to bring back the pandemic-hit city economy on the track, the Delhi government has started an amnesty scheme for late payment dues on rent lease and brought down interest rate to 10 per cent on such dues, providing relief to factory owners, officials said.

The move will benefit thousands of factory owners in Delhi, ruling AAP's Trade wing convener Brijesh Goyal said.
