US: Turkey, Qatar working to resume flights to Afghanistan

Ned Price

16 Sep 2021; MEMO: Turkey and Qatar are working to resume normal flights to Kabul Hamid Karzai International Airport, the United States State Department spokesperson said yesterday.

Ned Price said that the Taliban also share the same desire with Qatar and Turkey.

Beside chartered flights, he added: "there will be additional options for individuals to leave from Kabul International Airport."

On 1 September, the White House announced that the United States is working together with Turkey and Qatar on Afghanistan's Kabul Hamid Karzai International Airport. This came a day after the final US troops left Afghanistan after a 20-year occupation of the country.

Last week, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said the mission of protecting Afghanistan's Kabul Hamid Karzai International Airport could be given to a private security company instead of being taken on by a state.
