Delhi: 24-year-old held for rape of minor, had tried to kidnap another girl earlier

A 24 old man, identified as Prakash, has been arrested in South West Delhi for raping a 9 year old girl, in a portable toilet.

The girl described the man as “a tall, dark-complexioned uncle” to her counsellors.

It has been alleged that Prakash attempted to kidnap another minor girl hours before he raped the nine-year-old.

Russia to start trials of most advanced Katran combat drone this year

The most advanced Katran rotary-wing unmanned aerial vehicle publicly shown for the first time at the Victory Day parade in Moscow in the spring will enter flight tests before the end of the year, Russian Helicopters Group told TASS at the Army-2018 forum on Friday.

"Currently, the Katran drone is undergoing ground trials that will be concluded in the autumn of this year, after which the Group’s specialists will start the program of the Katran’s flight tests to be completed in 2019," the press office said.

JOHANNESBURG; 24 Aug 2018; (AP) — South Africa’s government said Friday it had summoned the top U.S. diplomat in the country to “convey the unhappiness of the people” over President Donald Trump’s tweet about alleged white-owned farm seizures and the “large scale killing of farmers.”

In a statement, South Africa said it told U.S. Charge d’Affaires Jessye Lapenn it was “disappointed” over the failure to use available diplomatic channels.

S. Korean impeached president Park sentenced to 25 years in prison by appeals court

SEOUL, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) -- Park Geun-hye, South Korea's impeached and ousted president, was sentenced Friday to 25 years in prison by an appeals court over corruption charges including bribery, exposing the deep-rooted collusive ties between politicians and businessmen.

The Seoul High Court raised Park's sentence by one year from the lower court's ruling of the 24-year imprisonment. Park was fined 20 billion won (18 million U.S. dollars), higher than the lower court's fine of 18 billion won (16 million U.S. dollars).

Student commits suicide after being raped, 3 held

Jind, Aug 24 (PTI) Three people including a woman were arrested for their alleged involvement in the rape and blackmail of a student who later committed suicide, police said.

The victim, pursuing her graduation, had blamed the trio for her death in the suicide note that she left behind. The arrests came after the victim's father lodged an FIR, they said.

In his complaint, the father alleged that the accused woman was his daughter's friend and had secretly shared her photos with her accomplices.

Indonesian earthquake death toll reaches 555

Jakarta, Aug 24 (AFP) A string of deadly earthquakes that rocked Indonesia's Lombok island this summer killed 555 people and injured nearly 1,500, the disaster agency said Friday, with hundreds of thousands left homeless.

The picturesque island next to holiday hotspot Bali was hit by two deadly quakes on July 29 and August 5.

On Sunday, it was shaken by a string of fresh tremors and aftershocks, with the strongest measuring 6.9 magnitude.

Germany calls for end to US dominance in global finance

BERLIN; 22 Aug 2018; AA: German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas on Wednesday proposed measures against U.S. dominance in global finance amid a growing row between Washington and Berlin over the Iran nuclear deal. 

In an article he wrote for daily Handelsblatt, Maas slammed U.S. President Donald Trump for imposing unilateral sanctions on Iran, without consulting European allies. 

China says must 'counter-attack' latest US tariffs

Beijing, Aug 23 (AFP) China today said it would continue to "counter-attack" as Washington imposed new tariffs on USD 16 billion worth of its goods, further inflaming trade tensions.

The US moves were "clearly suspected" of violating World Trade Organization rules, the commerce ministry said in a statement, adding that it would file a lawsuit against them under the WTO's dispute resolution mechanism.
