UK govt formally suspends Parliament for 5 weeks

The British government has formally suspended Parliament, sending lawmakers home for five weeks amid a Brexit crisis.

The legislature was officially prorogued, or suspended, with a formal ceremony in the House of Lords — but only after House of Commons Speaker John Bercow voiced his displeasure, saying many regard it as “an act of executive fiat.”

There were raucous scenes in the House of Commons as opposition lawmakers chanted “Shame on you.”

UK Defence Secretary condones mock executions

“You might pretend to pour petrol over them, when it’s actually water,” he said, describing how prisoners are manhandled by soldiers, “to give them an idea of the seriousness.”

British Airways says almost all UK flights cancelled over strike

London, Sept 9 (AFP) British Airways said Monday it has been forced to cancel almost all its UK flights on the first day of a two-day strike by pilots.

"After many months of trying to resolve the pay dispute, we are extremely sorry that it has come to this," BA said in a statement.

The airline said it remains willing to return to talks with the British Airline Pilots Association (BALPA).

Ireland warns PM Johnson: no-backstop equals no-deal Brexit

DUBLIN/LONDON (Reuters) - Ireland told British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Monday that he must make specific proposals on the future of Irish border if there is to be any hope of averting a no-deal Brexit, saying Dublin cannot not rely on simple promises.

The blunt remarks by Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar indicate the difficulty of Johnson’s gamble of using the threat of a no-deal exit to convince Germany and France that they must rewrite an exit agreement struck last November.

LONDON (AP) — British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, facing staunch opposition at home, told Ireland’s leader Monday that a new Brexit deal can be reached so Britain leaves the European Union by the Oct. 31 deadline.

Speaking alongside Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar in Dublin, Johnson said a deal on the Irish border question can be secured in time to enable a smooth British departure from the EU by the scheduled Brexit date.

LONDON (Reuters) - Angela Smith, the former UK Labour MP, will join the Liberal Democratic party, the Times newspaper reported in its Sunday edition.

Smith was among the seven lawmakers to quit the Labour Party in February over leader Jeremy Corbyn’s approach to Brexit and a row over anti-Semitism.
