British opposition parties unite to try to force PM to seek Brexit delay

LONDON/BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Opposition parties said they would try to pass a law which would force Prime Minister Boris Johnson to seek a delay to Britain’s departure from the European Union and prevent a potentially chaotic no-deal exit at the end of October.

The United Kingdom is heading towards a constitutional crisis at home and a showdown with the EU as Johnson has pledged to leave the bloc in 66 days without a deal unless Brussels agrees to renegotiate the Brexit divorce.

British Kashmiri MP asks UAE to reconsider award to Modi, butcher of Gujrat and oppressor of Kashmiris

LONDON, Aug 20 (APP): British Member of Parliament, Naz Shah has strongly opposed granting the Order of Sheikh Zayed award to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi who once recognized as the butcher of Muslims of Gujrat and now oppressor of people of occupied Kashmir.

In a written letter to Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi Sheik Mohammad bin Zayed Al Nahyan of United Arab Emirates (UAE), British Kashmiri MP Naz Shah asked the Crown prince of UAE to reconsider the grating of prestigious award of their country to Modi.

Oil rises on hopes of easing U.S.-China trade tension

LONDON (Reuters) - Oil prices rose on Monday after the United States and China both suggested they could ease up in a trade war that has undermined the outlook for the global economy and for crude demand.

Brent was up 33 cents, or 0.6%, at $59.67 a barrel by 0850 GMT, while U.S. oil was also up 33 cents, or 0.6%, at $54.50 a barrel.

U.S. President Trump said on Monday he believed China was seeking a trade deal after Beijing contacted U.S. officials overnight to say it wanted a return to talks.

UK PM says chances of Brexit deal with Brussels improving

LONDON, Aug. 25 (Xinhua) -- British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said Sunday the chances of Britain reaching a Brexit deal with the European Union are improving.

He used interviews with a range of British broadcast media at the G7 summit in France to give a Brexit update as the Oct. 31 departure date gets ever closer.

In Britain politicians opposed to Britain remaining in the bloc, as well as those opposed to a no-deal departure, continued Sunday to discuss their strategies as the re-opening of Parliament on September 3 nears.

British government welcomes China's release of Hong Kong consulate employee

LONDON (Reuters) - The British government on Saturday welcomed the release of an employee at its consulate in Hong Kong who had been detained in mainland China.

Simon Cheng was held for 15 days for violating public security management regulations, police in Shenzhen, across the border from Hong Kong, said on Saturday.

“We welcome the release of Simon Cheng and are delighted that he can be reunited with his family. We will continue to provide support to them,” a spokesman for Britain’s foreign ministry said.

Johnson, Trump discuss global trade ahead of G7 meeting

LONDON, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) -- British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Friday talked with U.S. President Donald Trump on foreign policy and global trade issues in a phone call before the coming G7 meeting.

A statement from the prime minister's office said they "looked forward to speaking further" at the G7 summit in France.

It will be their first meeting since Johnson became British prime minister.

The G7 summit comes nearly two months ahead of the Brexit deadline on Oct. 31.

UK signs deal with ROK to protect post-Brexit trade

LONDON, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- The United Kingdom (UK) signed a continuity Free Trade Agreement with its major trade partner the Republic of Korea (ROK) on Thursday to ensure businesses keep trading freely in the event of a no-deal Brexit on Oct. 31, in a fresh effort to protect post-Brexit trade.

The deal, signed by Secretary of State for International Trade (DIT) Liz Truss and ROK Minister of Trade Yoo Myung-Hee in London, replicates, as far as possible, the effects of the EU-Korea trade deal, allowing businesses to continue to benefit from preferential terms, the DIT said.

Nirav Modi to appear via videolink for remand hearing in UK

London, Aug 22 (PTI) Fugitive diamantaire Nirav Modi, wanted in India in connection with the nearly USD 2 billion Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud and money laundering case, is set to appear before a UK court for his customary 28-day remand hearing on Thursday.

The 48-year-old is likely to be informed of the dates for his trial on the extradition charges brought by the Indian government, being represented at Westminster Magistrates' Court in London by the UK's Crown Prosecution Service (CPS).
