China's trade accelerates in August despite coronavirus

Beijing, Sep 7 (AP-PTI) China's import and export growth accelerated in August despite disruptions due to the spread of the coronavirus's delta variant.

Exports rose 25.6% over a year earlier to 294.3 billion, up from July's 18.9% growth, customs data showed Tuesday. Imports rose 33.1% to 236 billion, up from the previous month's 28.7%.

China says it will maintain communication with new Afghan government

BEIJING, Sept 8 (Reuters) - China said on Wednesday it is ready to maintain communication with the leaders of the new Taliban government in Afghanistan, calling its establishment a "necessary step" in reconstruction.

Foreign ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin made the comment at a daily briefing in Beijing when asked if China would recognize the new government, whose leaders were named on Tuesday.

Hong Kong police arrest 4 members of group behind Tiananmen vigil

HONG KONG, Sept 8 (Reuters) - Hong Kong police on Wednesday arrested four members of a pro-democracy group that organises the annual June 4 rally to commemorate those who died in the bloody 1989 Tiananmen Square crackdown, in the latest blow to the opposition movement.

Activist and barrister Chow Hang Tung of the Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements in China was arrested along with three others, the group said.

Behind them: President Xi Jinping’s vision of making a more powerful, prosperous country by reviving revolutionary ideals, with more economic equality and tighter party control over society and entrepreneurs.

Since taking power in 2012, Xi has called for the party to return to its “original mission” as China’s economic, social and cultural leader and carry out the “ rejuvenation of the great Chinese nation.”

PIA uplifts 5.9 million Covid-19 vaccine doses from China to Pakistan

BEIJING, Sep 7 (APP): Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) continues to uplift Covid-19 vaccines from China to Pakistan as its two special cargo flights transported a new batch of 5.9 million doses of vaccines from Beijing Capital International Airport to Islamabad.

Special cargo flights – PK6852 and PK6853 took off from Beijing Capital Airport for Islamabad on Monday and Tuesday and transported 5.9 million doses, Qadir Bux Sangi, PIA Country Manager for China told APP here on Tuesday.

China holds international peacekeeping drill

ZHENGZHOU, Sept. 6 (Xinhua) -- China on Monday started holding an international peacekeeping drill code-named "Shared Destiny-2021."

It is the first time the Chinese military has organized such a multi-national live drill on peacekeeping, with the participation of troops from countries including China, Mongolia, Pakistan and Thailand.

The drill is held at a combined-arms tactical training base of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) Army in central China's Henan Province.

China's foreign trade up 23.7 pct in first eight months

BEIJING, Sept. 7 (Xinhua) -- China's total imports and exports expanded 23.7 percent year on year to 24.78 trillion yuan (about 3.84 trillion U.S. dollars) in the first eight months of the year, official data showed Tuesday.

The figure marked a 22.8-percent increase compared with the level registered during the same period in 2019, data from the General Administration of Customs showed.

Both exports and imports logged double-digit growth in the January-August period, surging 23.2 percent and 24.4 percent from a year earlier, respectively.

China to specify operation rules for Beijing stock exchange

BEIJING, Sept. 5 (Xinhua) -- China on Sunday started to solicit public opinion for the detailed operation rules of the new stock exchange which is to be set up in Beijing, a primary platform for smaller firms to meet their financing needs.

These rules, unveiled on the official website of China's National Equities Exchange and Quotations (NEEQ), or the "new third board," where the novel bourse built upon, involved the procedures of listing, trading and membership management of the new stock exchange.

Global stock markets rise after weak US hiring data

BEIJING (AP) — Global stock markets and Wall Street futures rose Monday after weak U.S. hiring in August fueled expectations the Federal Reserve might postpone withdrawal of economic stimulus that has boosted stock prices.

London and Frankfurt opened higher. Shanghai, Tokyo and Hong Kong rose.

Investors appeared to welcome Friday’s Labor Department report that U.S. employers added only 235,000 jobs in August, barely one-third of the consensus forecast of 730,000.
