India: Teen gang-raped at gunpoint

Muzaffarnagar (UP), Mar 9 (PTI) A 15-year-old girl was allegedly raped by four youths in a field at gunpoint in Uttar Pradesh's Muzaffarnagar district, police said on Saturday.

The incident occurred at a village in Mansoorpur area on Friday, the police said.

According to a complaint, the teenager had gone to the fields to collect fodder when the four accused came and took her to nearby sugarcane field. The accused raped her at gunpoint and threatened her with dire consequences if she informed anyone, a police officer said.

India: Attack on Kashmiris by saffron-brigade

Lucknow, Mar 7; PTI/GANASHAKTI:  After a group of men were seen on camera assaulting Kashmiris selling dry fruits in Daliganj locality in Uttar Pradesh's capital city, police swung into action and arrested four persons involved in the act.

The incident took place Wednesday evening amid the nationwide backlash on Kashmiris following the February 14 terror attack in Pulwama.

India: SP fields Mulayam from 'safest' Mainpuri LS seat

Lucknow, Mar 8 (PTI) The Samajwadi Party on Friday released a list of six candidates for the Lok Sabha polls in Uttar Pradesh, fielding party founder Mulayam Singh Yadav from its stronghold Mainpuri.

Dharmendra Yadav will contest from Badaun, Akshay Yadav from Firozabad, Kamlesh Katheria from Etawah, Bhailal Kol from Robertsganj and Shabbir Valmiki from Bahraich, the party announced.

The list was signed by SP national chief general secretary Ram Gopal Yadav.

India: NGT monitoring panel remains strict on directives

KANPUR: In the meeting of the National Green Tribunal monitoring Committee held at Circuit House here, the department officials concerned failed to answer properly the pertinent questions put up by the panel’s chairman Justice (Retd) Arun Tandon. Directing the officers of the Jal Nigam and Nagar Nigam, he asked them to first study five-hundred-page NGT orders within five days. It remained his strict instruction. He was quite at unease at complete ignorance of the tribunal directives in regard to Ganga cleaning issued on July 13, 2017.

India: Woman missing for 9 years rescued from brothel

Varanasi (UP), Mar 6 (PTI) A 21-year-old woman, who went missing nine years ago, was rescued from Uttar Pradesh's Varanasi district on Wednesday, police said.

A raid was conducted at a house in a red-light area of Maruadih town and the woman was rescued. Two men and half-a-dozen women have been detained, the police said.

The Varanasi crime branch and the local police jointly conducted the raid and freed the woman, who had gone missing at the age of 12 from her house in Chandauli district, a police officer said.

India: KU's bid to conduct copy-free exams dampens

KANPUR: Determined to conduct copy-free examinations of Kanpur University, the administrative officials of the university were showing attentiveness. In the raid at Karmshetra Degree College, Auriya conducted under university registrar on Sunday, the examinees were caught with copying materials and the mobile sets.

India: UP to get 40 paise/unit cheaper power from plant

New Delhi, Mar 5 (PTI) Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation will get 40 paise per unit cheaper electricity from Prayagraj Power Generation Company's plant at Bara in Prayagraj district, which will translate into savings to the tune of Rs 500 crore annually.

An arm of Tata Power-backed Resurgent Power Ventures, Renascent Power Ventures -- which has acquired 75.01 per cent stake in the Bara power plant -- will be offering 40 paise per unit cheaper electricity to Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Ltd (UPPCL) under revised terms of power purchase agreement, a source said.
