'World's largest seed' displayed at Kumbh in India

Allahabad, Feb 10 (PTI) An exhibition by the Ministry of Environment, which among other things displays a double coconut palm seed weighing a whopping 30 kg, is attracting eyeballs at the Kumbh Mela, the largest congregation in the world.

A Botanical Survey of India (BSI) scientist has claimed that the seed is the world's largest.

Packed schedule awaits Priyanka Gandhi on Lucknow visit

Lucknow, Feb 9 (PTI) Newly appointed Congress general secretary in-charge of eastern Uttar Pradesh Priyanka Gandhi Vadra will have her hands full during her four-day visit to Lucknow as she will meet senior leaders and office bearers of the party.

This will be Priyanka Gandhi's maiden visit to Uttar Pradesh after she formally entered politics last month.

India: Adverse impact of tanneries' closure during Kumbh

KANPUR: One can easily come to know of the cold impact of the tanneries’ closure over the labourers during the Ardh Kumbh fair. First, they have been rendered jobless and secondly, they are failing to find petty jobs even for their livelihood.

 As a result, one poor couple had to sell their newly born child to a well-to-do childless family living in the city areas. The poor labourer’s wife took this strong decision with the heavy heart and gulped down all the mother’s emotions.

India: 5 stray cows die of cold in UP

Muzaffarnagar, Feb 9 (PTI) Five stray cows lodged at a temporary shelter home in Uttar Pradesh's Shamli district died allegedly of cold, an official said Saturday.

The deaths were reported from a shelter home in Sambhalna village which comes under the jurisdiction of Babri police station and an inquiry has been ordered, said Sub-Divisional Magistrate Prashant Kumar.

The carcasses were sent for postmortem, he said.

India: Death toll in hooch liquor tragedy rises to 70

Haridwar/Saharanpur, Feb 9 (PTI): The death toll in the spurious liquor tragedy that hit two adjoining districts has risen to 70 with more people dying of the hooch they drank at a Haridwar village, officials said Saturday.

Twenty-four of the victims died in Balupur and its neighbouring villages in Uttarakhand's Haridwar district, an official said.

India: Girls to outnumber boys at CSJMU exam

KANPUR: 55% female students are going to appear at the annual examinations of Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj University (CSJMU) beginning from February 26, this year. Like Lucknow University annual examinations which have been advanced by a week and also will be held on Sundays to ensure that they are over before the general polls, Kanpur University has also declared its scheme for the examinations.
