India: Youth's bike falls into cave, dies later

KANPUR: One youth lost his precious life in a 10-feet deep cave on Panki-Kalyanpur road here on Thursday late night. Jalkal had dug up a pothole in order to repair the water pipeline. But it was not filled up properly after completion of repairing work. Even barricading was not done suitably. The bike entangled into the wooden log and fell into the deep opening. The rider was battling between life and death inside the ditch.

India: Priyanka, Scindia given target to form Cong govt in UP

Amethi (UP), Jan 24; PTI: Congress president Rahul Gandhi Thursday said he has given his sister Priyanka Gandhi, newly entrusted with eastern Uttar Pradesh, the target of ensuring that the party forms the next government in the state.

The Congress will also fight the coming Lok Sabha polls with “full strength”, he said at a public meeting in his constituency.

His two-day visit to Amethi had coincided Wednesday with the formal entry of Priyanka Gandhi in politics, after years of speculation on whether she would take the plunge.

India: BJP's Tiranga yatra in AMU triggers row

Aligarh (UP), Jan 24 (PTI) Aligarh Muslim University has served a show-cause notice to a student leader over a `tiranga yatra' through the campus, saying it was held without permission and triggering a row.

The university said it followed procedure and believed that the motorcycle procession was meant to polarise students on the campus.

But the leader from the BJP's student wing alleged bias and said he would complain to the Human Resource Development Ministry.

Indian Cong workers want Priyanka to take on Modi in Varanasi

Varanasi, Jan 24 (PTI) Posters urging Priyanka Gandhi to contest the coming general elections from Varanasi-- Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Lok Sabha constituency-- came up in the holy city on Thursday.

The local unit of the Congress too demanded that Priyanka, who formally entered politics on Wednesday and was appointed the general secretary for Uttar Pradesh East, be pitted directly against Modi to galvanise voters of UP and neighbouring states.

KANPUR: A romance ended with the youth’s plunge into the sacred river on Thursday. Standing on an even spot of the historic Dhruv Teela in Bitthoor area, the disturbed lover took an ultimate resolution.

That distressed youth, who was brimming with emotional thoughts and desperately devoted on his passionate love with a female, could not bear her argumentative conversation.

4 die, 8 hurt in SUV-Container collision

KANPUR: On Wednesday morning accident near Shakurabad Bakewar on Mughal road highway in Fatehpur, three members of a family, a driver died in an SUV-Container collision.

As many as eight people also suffered severe injuries. Arriving from Bhind they were going to take part in a funeral of their kins in Fatehpur. Two breathed their last on the spot while another two expired during the treatment in a hospital, the police said adding that the dead bodies had been shifted to the mortuary.

India: Man arrested for raping and killing minor girl

Ghaziabad, Jan 23 (PTI) A man has been arrested for allegedly raping and killing a six-year-old girl in Loni area here, police said Wednesday.

"The girl had gone for tuition along with her brother on Monday evening. After returning, she again went outside and didn't return thereafter. Her parents and neighbours searched for her till late night but in vain," they said.

On Tuesday morning, when the girl's father was going to offer prayers he discovered his child's body lying in a deserted plot near a mosque, said DIG Upendra Agarwal.

India: BHU cardiologist's hunger strike enters fourth day

Varanasi, Jan 23 (PTI) Banaras Hindu University cardiologist Om Shankar's indefinite hunger strike, demanding a separate AIIMS for Varanasi, entered its fourth day on Wednesday.

"Prime Minister Narendra Modi, UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and President Ram Nath Kovind visited the city for Pravasi Bharatiya Divas but my demand for health has gone unheard," the senior cardiologist said from the entrance gate of BHU, which is the venue for the protest.

India: Prohibitory orders imposed in Shamli for UP Board exams

Muzaffarnagar, Jan 23 (PTI) Prohibitory orders were imposed in Shamli district to maintain law and order and in view of the UP board examination, officials said Tuesday.

Additional District Magistrate K B Singh said orders were imposed Tuesday under Section 144 of the CrPC, preventing assembly of more than four people. People were also from carrying firearms and using loudspeakers with immediate effect.

The Uttar Pradesh Board examination will begin on February 7 and will be held over 16 working days.
