Hong Kong will review COVID-19 restrictions as cases decline

TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) — Hong Kong’s leader said Sunday that the government would consider lifting strict social distancing measures as new COVID-19 infections in the city continued trending downward.

“I wouldn’t promise now that there’s room for adjustment,” Chief Executive Carrie Lam said. “But following a review, we have a duty to account for the findings in this review and the direction we will take.”

Japan’s PM visits Cambodia, also one of China’s key partners

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (AP) — Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida was in Cambodia for talks with his counterpart, Hun Sen, on Sunday to deepen relations with one of the Southeast Asia’s closest partners of both China and Japan.

Kishida and Hun Sen were discussing cooperation covering trade and investment, education, infrastructure, defense and security, and the post-pandemic recovery, Cambodian officials said.

S. Korea’s next leader to abandon Blue House for new office

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — South Korea’s incoming president said Sunday he will abandon the mountainside presidential palace of Blue House and establish his office at the Defense Ministry compound in central Seoul to better communicate with the public.

The plan drew an immediate backlash from critics of the relocation plan, who warned that a hasty movement of top government offices would undermine South Korea’s national security, require excessive spending and violate property rights of residents in the new presidential office area.

Broad space for China-Pak footwear industry as Pakistan’s exports soar

Former Malaysian Human Rights Commissioner Appointed As New Rep to AICHR

KUALA LUMPUR, March 19 (NNN-Bernama) — Former Malaysian Human Rights Commissioner, Prof Dr Aishah Bidin has been appointed as the new Representative of Malaysia to the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR) for the term 2022-2024.

Malaysian Foreign Minister Saifuddin Abdullah in a statement here said she would succeed Eric Paulsen who served for a three-year term of 2019-2021.

Philippines presidential hopefuls say social media platforms should be held accountable

Vice Foreign Minister Le Yucheng also acknowledged Moscow's point of view on NATO, saying the alliance should not further expand eastwards, forcing a nuclear power like Russia "into a corner".

Car crash kills 7 in southern Myanmar

YANGON, March 19 (Xinhua) -- Seven people were killed in a road accident Saturday on Pathein-Chaungtha road in Ayeyarwady region, according to the local police.

A private car collided with an express bus and caught fire, killing seven people on board, including two men, three women and two children, said an officer of the Ayeyarwady police.

The officer said the passengers on the express bus were not seriously injured as they all got off the bus after the accident. They tried to open the doors of the private car when the fire broke out, but failed.

Timor Leste holds presidential election

JAKARTA, March 19 (Xinhua) -- Timor Leste held a presidential election on Saturday.

There are 16 candidates competing in the election, including the incumbent president Francisco Guterres, Nobel Prize laureate Jose Ramos-Horta and former Catholic priest Martinho Germano da Silva Gusmao.

For the first time, there are four female candidates running in the contest, including deputy prime minister Armanda Berta Dos Santos.

The result will be officially announced later this month.
