China urges U.S. to take concrete actions to ease situation in Ukraine

BEIJING, March 15 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson on Tuesday urged the United States to make tangible efforts to ease the situation in Ukraine.

Spokesperson Zhao Lijian made the remarks at a daily press briefing in response to a question on recent allegations reportedly made by an unnamed U.S. official on relations between Russia and China with regard to the Ukraine crisis.

Hong Kong shares soar 9% on China pledge to support economy

TOKYO (AP) — Hong Kong’s share benchmark, the Hang Seng index, soared 9% on Wednesday after a senior Chinese official said Beijing would provide more support for the slowing Chinese economy.

The surge was a reprieve from recent heavy selling of Chinese technology companies and other pressures that had taken the Hang Seng to six-year lows.

Officials at a Cabinet meeting in Beijing promised to “invigorate the economy” with “supporting measures” for the struggling real estate and other steps, the official Xinhua News Agency reported.

Vietnam drops COVID-19 restrictions for foreign visitors

HANOI, Vietnam (AP) — Vietnam on Wednesday scrapped quarantine and other travel restrictions for foreign visitors in an effort to fully reopen its border after two years of pandemic-related closure, the government said.

Visitors entering the Southeast Asian country only need to show a negative COVID-19 test prior to arrival, according to the Health Ministry, which said the new measures were effective immediately.

China tries to calm markets by pledging support for economy

BEIJING (AP) — China’s government tried Wednesday to reassure jittery investors after regulatory crackdowns caused stock prices to plunge, by promising support for its struggling real estate industry, internet companies and entrepreneurs who want to raise money abroad.

Regulators should issue market-friendly policies to “invigorate the economy,” officials said at a Cabinet meeting led by Vice Premier Liu He, President Xi Jinping’s top economic adviser, the official Xinhua News Agency said

US holds Chinese goods, cites possible North Korean labor

BEIJING (AP) — The U.S. customs agency says it is holding imported goods from Chinese sports brand Li Ning after an investigation indicated they were made by North Korean labor.

U.S. law prohibits imports of goods made in North Korea or by North Korean citizens without proof they weren’t made by forced labor, according to a notice from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection in Washington.

The goods will be forfeited if Li Ning Co. cannot provide “clear and convincing evidence” within 30 days that it wasn’t made by convict, forced or indentured labor, the agency said.

Seoul: North Korean missile exploded in air in failed launch

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — A North Korean missile fired from its capital region exploded soon after its liftoff in an apparent failed weapons launch on Wednesday, South Korea’s military said, amid speculation that the North has been preparing to launch its longest-range missile in its most significant provocation in years.

MANILA, Mar 15 (NNN-PNA) – The tandem of presidential aspirant, Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and vice-presidential candidate, Sara Duterte-Carpio, maintained a commanding lead in the latest election survey released yesterday.

U.S. carrier displays air power over Yellow Sea as N.Korea seen set to test long-range missile

SEOUL, March 15 (Reuters) - The USS Abraham Lincoln aicraft carrier led military exercises in the Yellow Sea, and air defence artillery at Osan air base intensified drills, U.S. forces in Asia said on Tuesday amid signs of an imminent North Korean long-range missile test.

Tension on the Korean Peninsula has been growing amid speculation North Korea could test its largest intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) at full range as soon as this week, after threatening to break a self-imposed 2017 moratorium on long-range missile and nuclear testing.
