Hong Kong, Shanghai shares sink as virus trumps strong data

BANGKOK (AP) — Share prices tumbled in China on Tuesday, with Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index down nearly 6% and the Shanghai Composite index sinking 5% as virus lockdowns and rising numbers of COVID cases threaten to disrupt manufacturing and trade.

The sell-off gathered pace late in the session despite the release of data showing strong increases in retail sales, industrial production and investment in January-February. It followed the Chinese central bank’s decision not to ease interest rates to spur economic growth.

Turkmenistan leader’s son wins presidential election

ASHGABAT, Turkmenistan (AP) — Turkmenistan established a political dynasty Tuesday, as authorities said the son of the Central Asian country’s leader won its presidential election after an unusual vote-counting delay.

Serdar Berdymukhamedov, 40, was the overwhelming favorite in Saturday’s election to lead the isolated, gas-rich country and succeed his father, Gurbanguly. The central election commission said Serdar Berdymukhamedov won 72.97% of the votes.

His nearest rival in a field of nine candidates was university official Khyrdyr Nunnayev, who won 11%.

Seoul’s next leader faces limited choices over North Korea

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — After winning a bitterly contested presidential election, South Korean conservative Yoon Suk Yeol will enter office facing a quickly growing North Korean nuclear threat — and with few easy choices ahead to deal with it.

A former prosecutor with no foreign policy experience who kickstarted his political career nine months ago, Yoon will face a turbulent moment in global affairs and the decades-old standoff with the North, over which many experts see Seoul as having lost leverage under the policies of outgoing President Moon Jae-in.

COVID-19 cases more than double in China’s growing outbreak

BEIJING (AP) — China’s new COVID-19 cases Tuesday more than doubled from the previous day as the country faces by far its biggest outbreak since the early days of the pandemic.

The National Health Commission said 3,507 new locally spread cases had been identified in the latest 24-hour period, up from 1,337 a day earlier.

Beijing rejects ‘false’ US claims that Russia sought Chinese military aid for Ukraine op

BEIJING, March 14. /TASS/: Beijing blasted Washington’s recent allegations as disinformation that Russia sought military assistance from China to conduct its special operation in Ukraine, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Zhao Lijian said at a briefing on Monday.

"The allegations on the matter disseminated by the US are false information," the diplomat specified.

Philippines Approves Emergency Use Of Sinovac COVID-19 Vaccine For Children

MANILA, Mar 14 (NNN-PNA) – The Philippines’ Food and Drug Administration (FDA), granted the emergency use for China’s Sinovac COVID-19 vaccine for children, Health Secretary, Francisco Duque, said today.

Duque said, the government would soon administer the Sinovac COVID-19 vaccine, or the inactivated CoronaVac vaccine, to children aged six and above. “We are just looking at the operational details to implement this. But it will not take long,” Duque added.

Mongolia Launches National Movement Against Alcoholism

Japanese PM calls for party unity for upcoming upper house election

TOKYO, March 13 (Xinhua) -- Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida on Sunday urged ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) lawmakers to unite as one to win the upcoming House of Councilors election and ensure a stable coalition government.

Kishida, president of the LDP, made the remarks at a party convention, emphasizing the importance of its coalition with its smaller partner Komeito.

He dismissed an emerging view that the relationship between the LDP and Komeito has become awkward over cooperation in the election, which will possibly be held in July.

Earthquakes shake Indonesia, Philippines; no tsunami threat

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — Strong, shallow underwater earthquakes shook western Indonesia and the Philippine capital region Monday, but no serious damage was reported and no tsunami warnings were issued.

In Indonesia, a magnitude-6.7 quake that was 16 kilometers (10 miles) deep struck about 169 kilometers (104.8 miles) west of Pariaman, a town in West Sumatra province, the U.S. Geological Survey said.
