S.Korea’s Daily COVID-19 Cases Hit Record High Of Nearly 50,000

SEOUL, Feb 9 (NNN-YONHAP) – South Korea’s daily number of COVID-19 cases hit a new record high, amid the spread of the Omicron variant, the health authorities said today.

According to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA), the country reported 49,567 more cases of COVID-19 for the past 24 hours, raising the total number of infections to 1,131,239.

ADB Approves Two Million USD Grant To Help Typhoon Victims In Philippines

MANILA, Feb 9 (NNN-PNA) – The Asian Development Bank (ADB), said today, it has approved a 2-million-U.S.-dollar grant, to support the Philippines’ emergency response, to the devastation in central and southern provinces, caused by Typhoon Rai.

Typhoon Rai, the 15th and the strongest of last year, that made landfall in the country in Dec, killed more than 400 people.

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 8 (NNN-Bernama) — Malaysian palm oil growers are benefitting from Indonesia’s new export ruling that came into effect on Jan 27, Maybank Investment Bank (Maybank IB) said.

The investment bank said Malaysian crude palm oil (CPO) price gap between Indonesia and Malaysia widened further by US$58.75 (RM246) per tonne to US$329.14 (RM1,378) per tonne on Feb 3 from US$270.39 (RM1,132) per tonne on Jan 27. (US$1 = RM4.18)

North Korea boasts of 'shaking the world' by testing missiles that can strike U.S.

SEOUL, Feb 8 (Reuters) - North Korea boasted on Tuesday that it is one of only a handful of countries in the world to field nuclear weapons and advanced missiles and the only one standing up to the United States by "shaking the world" with missile tests.

International tension has been rising over a recent series of North Korean ballistic missile tests, actions long banned by the U.N. Security Council. January was a record month of such tests, with at least seven launches of nine missiles including a new type of "hypersonic missile" able to manoeuvre at high speed.

Japan's economy watcher sentiment registers sharpest decline in decade

TOKYO, Feb. 8 (Xinhua) -- The diffusion index of confidence, a business sentiment indicator for the Japanese economy, logged the steepest plunge in over a decade in January amid concerns fueled by COVID-19 infection resurgence, Japanese government statistics showed Tuesday.

The figure, which measures the current business confidence compared to three months ago among "economy watchers," workers with jobs sensitive to economic trends like taxi drivers and restaurant staff, decreased 19.6 points from December to 37.9, according to the Cabinet Office.
