U.S., Australia urged to stop interfering in China's internal affairs

BEIJING, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) -- China on Friday urged the United States and Australia to stop interfering in China's internal affairs and making waves in the Asia-Pacific region.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian made the remarks at a press briefing in response to a statement after Australia-U.S. ministerial consultations that expressed concern over the South China Sea, Xinjiang, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

China applies to join Pacific trade pact abandoned by Trump

Beijing, Sep 17 (AP-PTI) China has applied to join an 11-nation Asia-Pacific free trade group in an effort to increase its influence over international policies.

Cambodia vaccinating 6-to-11-year-olds before schools reopen

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (AP) — Cambodia began vaccinating 6-to-11-year-olds Friday so students can safely return to schools that have been closed for months due to the coronavirus.

Prime Minister Hun Sen inaugurated the campaign to vaccinate the children, speaking live on state television and his Facebook page as his grandchildren and young family members of other senior officials were shown being given their jabs.

China astronauts return after 90 days aboard space station

BEIJING (AP) — A trio of Chinese astronauts returned to earth Friday after a 90-day stay aboard their nation’s first space station in China’s longest mission yet.

Nie Haisheng, Liu Boming and Tang Hongbo landed in the Shenzhou-12 spacecraft Friday at just after 1:30 p.m. (0530 GMT) after having undocked from the space station Thursday morning.

State broadcaster CCTV showed footage of the spacecraft parachuting to land in the Gobi Desert where it was met by helicopters and off-road vehicles.

Severe Tropical Storm Approaches Japan, Officials Call For Caution

TOKYO, Sept 16 (NNN-NHK) – The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said today that, severe tropical storm Chanthu, is forecast to approach Japan, calling people to stay alert for landslides, heavy winds and high waves in western Japan, as rough weather is projected from northern to western Japan through Saturday.

Chanthu, now heading northwest after spinning over the East China Sea the previous days, is expected to alter its tracks. It will possibly turn into a low-pressure system tomorrow morning, carrying gradually intensifying rain and winds to western Japan, the JMA said.

Japan PM contender Kono wants renewable energy, 5G to be focus of stimulus package

TOKYO, Sept 16 (Reuters) - Japan's vaccine minister Taro Kono, a contender to replace Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga, said on Thursday any new economic stimulus measures should prioritise spending on renewable energy and expansion of 5G networks nationwide.

In a group interview, Kono also said it was hard to change monetary policy abruptly now given the strain the coronavirus pandemic is inflicting on the economy.

Indonesia in talks with WHO to become global vaccine hub: minister

JAKARTA, Sept 16 (Reuters) - Indonesia is in talks with the World Health Organization (WHO) as well as six drug companies to become a global hub for manufacturing vaccines, its health minister told Reuters.

Detailing the ambitious strategy for the first time, Budi Gunadi Sadikin said in an interview that Indonesia would kickstart the initiative by prioritising purchases of COVID-19 vaccines from companies that shared technology and set up facilities in Indonesia.
