India: Two terrorists of United Liberation of Bodoland killed in Assam

Guwahati, Sep 18 (PTI) Two suspected militants of a newly formed outfit have been killed and their camp busted by security forces in Assam's Kokrajhar district, a top police officer said on Saturday.

Additional director general of Assam Police GP Singh said in a tweet that a camp of United Liberation of Bodoland (ULB) at Ultapani area of Kokrajhar was busted by security forces during an operation that had commenced on Friday night.

India: BJP MP Babul Supriyo joins TMC

New Delhi, Sep 18 (PTI) BJP MP and former minister Babul Supriyo, who recently announced that he was quitting politics, joined the Trinamool Congress in Kolkata on Saturday.

"Today, in the presence of national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee and RS MP Derek O'Brien, former Union Minister and sitting MP Babul Supriyo joined the Trinamool family," the party said in a tweet.

India: Amarinder Singh decides to quit as Punjab CM: sources

New Delhi, Sep 18 (PTI) Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh has decided to put in his papers ahead of the crucial Congress Legislature Party meeting in Chandigarh on Saturday evening, sources close to him said.

The chief minister will meet the Punjab governor around 4.30 pm and resign from the post. Earlier in the day, Amarinder Singh spoke to Congress president Sonia Gandhi and expressed his anguish and displeasure over his repeated "humiliation", the sources said.

India: SP MLA roughs traffic cops for clicking workers' photos

Kanpur: Samajwadi Party MLA Irfan Solanki on Friday was reported to have insulted and threatened two traffic police officials during a rally of party leader Abu Azmi here.

During the arguments with the traffic policemen, Solanki demanded action against the officers, saying they clicked pictures of the SP workers to penalise them for traffic violations.

The incident was clicked by the camera and displayed the SP MLA continuously threatening them.

Samajwadi Party workers had gathered here to give a grand welcome to Abu Azmi to the city.

India-China standoff at LAC: Jaishankar seeks early resolution of issues

India: Saturday closure irks admission seekers at DAV College

Kanpur: On the third Saturday of the month the banks remain opened but colleges did not open. Why so? Many who reached at the city's older and prominent college gate were dazed to find both of the iron doors of the degree college closed.

Those who stepped up to enquire of the reason were told it would be reasonable to come on Monday.

Gatekeeper looking too older and lanky did not provide an exact cause of the closure.

Girls who were seeking admission turned up at the college were surprised and over-heard reacting to one another move to come on Monday. 

India: Facility of air service extending for passengers from Kanpur

Kanpur: It is a big accomplishment of the city that it has now been connected with direct air service to Hyderabad, Bangalore, Mumbai, and Delhi respectively.

Cities like Lucknow, Varanasi, Prayagraj, Gorakhpur, and Bareilly, remains available from Kanpur as well. The service has repeatedly begun on September 15, this year.

Passengers say they are happy with the new arrangement of the air service. If the facilities are increasing day by day it should be welcomed with a good gesture.

India: Congress forms screening committee for UP assembly polls

New Delhi, Sep 17 (PTI) Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Friday constituted the party's screening committee for the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections with Jitendra Singh as its chairman.

Rajya Sabha MP Deepender Singh Hooda and Maharashtra MLA Varsha Gaikwad have been appointed as members of the panel, which also has the party general secretary in-charge for Uttar Pradesh as its member.

India: Waterlogged areas worsen situation in Kanpur

Kanpur: Since the past three days the city residents are witnessing heavy rains. There were some districts where more than 100 mm of rain has been recorded.

The torrential rains have waterlogged the roads in such a way that the roads are closed and people are finding it difficult to even get out of their homes.

Some are seen levelling the trenches. The car owners are not minding if the road users are getting dirtier by the dregs of the stagnant logged water splashing on their clothing. In such a grim and awkwardly situation, problems are going to increase.

India: Two metro stations near Tikri border closed due to 'security' reasons

New Delhi, Sep 17 (PTI) Two Delhi Metro stations near Tikri border with Haryana, one of the sites of the ongoing farmers' protests, were on Friday closed owing to security reasons, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation said.

The two stations in Haryana -- Pandit Shree Ram Sharma and Bahadurgarh City -- fall on the Green Line of the network.

The DMRC tweeted to alert commuters: "Security Update Entry/exit for Pandit Shree Ram Sharma and Bahadurgarh City have been closed".
