DHAKA, Feb 29 (NNN-BSS) – Thousands of people in Bangladesh staged demonstrations, protesting against violent clashes in the Indian capital, New Delhi.
After Friday’s weekly Jummah prayers, the protesters marched on the streets from Baitul Mukarram National Mosque in the city, chanting anti-Indian slogans.
Hundreds of anti-riot policemen were deployed to thwart any untoward incident, following the demonstration, joined by members of local political Islamic groups and organisations.
Members of Islamic parties also held demonstrations in parts of the country after the prayers.
In Dhaka, agitators burnt an effigy of Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, and his pictures, with allegations that the violence in India was against Muslims and committed by his Hindu-government.
Leaders of the Islamic parties in Dhaka urged the Bangladeshi government, to cancel its invitation to Modi to attend Bangladeshi founding father, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s birth centenary celebration ceremony, scheduled to be held in the middle of next month.
Dozens of people were dead and hundreds of others injured, in the violence, triggered by the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), in the Indian capital, last weekend.
