BAGHDAD, Nov 18 (NNN-NINA) – A female child was killed and five other civilians were wounded, in a Katyusha rocket barrage, targeting the heavily fortified Green Zone, in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad yesterday.
Several projectiles “landed on Grand festivities Square and surrounding areas, and near the Medical City and Zawra Park,” the media office of the Iraqi Joint Operations Command (JOC) said in a statement.
“What the capital witnessed last night will not pass without accountability, and our security forces and intelligence service have begun procedures to identify the perpetrators to bring them to justice,” JOC said.
In an earlier statement, JOC said, four Katyusha rockets were fired from the al-Amin neighbourhood in eastern Baghdad, at the Green Zone.
The attack prompted the anti-missile weapons to fire back on the rockets, while sirens were heard in the zone, which houses some of the main Iraqi government offices and the U.S. embassy.
No group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack, but the Iraqi military bases, housing U.S. troops across Iraq and the U.S. embassy in the Green Zone have been frequently targeted by mortar and rocket attacks.
