23 June 2021; MEMO: Qatar is the safest country in the Middle East according to the 2021Global Peace Index's Societal Safety and Security measures.
The Gulf state came in at 15th globally, but tops the regional list, with the UAE and Kuwait coming in second and third.
According to the Global Peace Index, Iceland is the safest country globally for the 13th year in a row.
A total of 163 countries are featured in the report, which takes into account 23 different indicators broken into categories of Ongoing International and Domestic Conflict, Societal Safety and Security and Militarization.
The number of internal and external violent conflicts, level of distrust, political instability, potential for terrorist acts, number of homicides, military expenditures as a percentage of GDP are all assessed when working out the global ranking.
Qatar has repeatedly been named the safest country in the world, according the Numbeo's Crime Index.
The Gulf state topped the list with Taiwan, the UAE and Oman coming second, third and fourth.
