RABAT, July 26 (Xinhua) -- Moroccan National Tourist Office (ONMT) and Israeli national carrier El Al signed a memorandum of understanding on the promotion of Moroccan tourist destinations, after the resumption of diplomatic ties between the two countries in 2020, ONMT said Monday.
The signing followed Sunday's inauguration of the first two direct commercial flights between Israel's Tel Aviv and Morocco's Marrakech, operated by El Al and Israir that operates international charter services from Ben Gurion International Airport.
Starting Aug. 10, El Al will also operate three weekly flights to Morocco's biggest city Casablanca, while a third Israeli airline, Arkia, will launch its flights to Morocco in September, ONMT said in a statement.
These new flights follow several months of discussions held by ONMT with Israeli tourism professionals, according to the statement.
A series of meetings will be organized this week between Moroccan and Israeli professionals in the cities of Marrakech and Essaouira, it said.
Morocco and Israel signed on Jan. 21 an agreement to launch direct flights between the two countries, with no limitation on the number of flights and air carriers that could operate the new route.
The deal also calls for up to 10 weekly cargo flights.
