LIMA, March 13 (NNN-ANDINA) — Peruvian Foreign Affairs Minister Cesar Landa expressed to United States Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs, Brian Nichols, Peru’s interest in reaching an agreement for the non-lethal interdiction of illicit flights to combat drug trafficking.
The dignitaries met in Chile during the activities linked to the recent swearing-in of the hosting country’s President Gabriel Boric.
Within this framework, the Cabinet member reaffirmed Peru’s commitment to the fight against illicit drug trafficking and the importance of continuing to implement international cooperation for this purpose.
The Foreign Affairs Ministry maintains permanent contact with US and foreign high-ranking authorities in its aim to coordinate efforts to combat the scourge of drug trafficking.
In fact, last February there was a meeting with US Ambassador to Peru Lisa Kenna and her anti-narcotics team.
Similarly, last March, a meeting was held with US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman, with whom anti-drug cooperation was discussed.
Also, this week there was a meeting with Deputy Assistant Secretary at the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs, Heide Fulton, and White House Office of National Drug Control Policy Assistant Director Eric Talbot.
The purpose of this working visit was to evaluate the different cooperation programs developed by the US Government in Peru.
Last Thursday, Landa participated in the launch in Peru of the annual report of the International Narcotics Control Board (INCB). At the event, he reiterated Peru’s commitment to the fight against drugs.
