CHISINAU, October 20. /TASS/: Moldova has paid for the current gas supplies to Gazprom, Vadim Cheban chairman of the board of the Moldovagaz gas distribution company announced on Thursday.
"With the assistance of the government of the republic of Moldova, JSC Moldovagaz transferred $53.5 million to PJSC Gazprom for September natural gas supplies. The company also transferred $27.4 million to the supplier as an advance payment in the amount of 50% of the total payment for supplies in October," Cheban wrote in his Telegram channel.
According to the Prime Minister of the republic Natalia Gavrilitsa, a decision was made the day before to allocate about $54 million to Moldovagaz on the security of the company's gas transmission network in Moldova.
Debt repayment and timely payments were among the main conditions on which Gazprom agreed in October 2021 to extend the contract for gas supplies to Moldova for the next five years. One of the clauses of the agreement implies that Moldovagaz was to pay for the cost of gas consumed in the previous month, as well as half of the volume consumed in the current month, by the 20th day of each month.
Moldovagaz faced financial difficulties after the country’s authorities tried to artificially contain the increase in domestic tariffs. In this situation, the company repeatedly delayed payments and received a notification from Gazprom about a possible cessation of supplies.
