QUITO, July 9 (NNN-PRENSA LATINA) — Ecuadorian Foreign Minister Gustavo Manrique revealed that Ecuador is negotiating the construction of a migrant center to attend people who want to travel to the United States.
Manrique affirmed he has held conversations with the US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, so that the South American nation may be part of the initiative and have an office here.
Recently, US President Joe Biden announced the creation of Regional Immigration Processing Centers (RPC) to reduce the number of irregular immigrants. According to a report by the digital portal Primicias, the first RPCs will be opened in Colombia and Guatemala.
The head of Ecuadorian diplomacy assured Radio Centro radio station that the intention is migrants have the possibility to travel in a regular way, through the process established by the U.S. centers.
This would imply allowing the migration, on a temporary basis, of Ecuadorians who want to work in the US and who can do so legally for a period of a year and then return to the country, the official said.
Panama’s Migration office revealed last January that Ecuadorians are the second nationality that crosses the Darien irregularly. At least 29,356 crossed the jungle during 2022.
