India: Assam's deputy speaker tests positive for COVID-19

Guwahati/Silchar, Jul 28 (PTI) Assam Assembly's Deputy Speaker Aminul Haque Laskar tested positive for COVID-19 on Tuesday, the sixth MLA from the ruling BJP to get infected by the coronavirus in the state.

Laskar's driver has also tested positive for the infection, officials said.

"With a very sad heart I would like to inform that I have been tested Covid-19 positive (+ve) from the first swab sample test few minutes back. I was not feeling well was since morning (sic)," Laskar said on his Facebook page.

India: Over 44 pc inmates in Guwahati jail test COVID-positive

Guwahati, Jul 23 (PTI) Over 44 per cent of the 984 prisoners in the Guwahati Central Jail, including peasant leader Akhil Gogoi and student activist Sharjeel Imam, have tested positive for COVID-19, a senior official said on Thursday.

The Gauhati High Court has ordered the Assam government to provide the best treatment to prisoners who have tested positive for COVID-19 after suo motu cognisance of the rising number of cases inside the jails.

India: 3 suspected Bangladeshi cattle lifters lynched in Assam

Karimganj, Jul 19 (PTI) Three suspected Bangladeshi cattle lifters were killed by a mob at a tea estate in Assam's Karimganj district, police said on Sunday.

A group of cattle thieves crossed the Indo-Bangladesh border and entered the Bogrijan Tea Estate Patharkandi Police Station area, about 1.5 km away from the border, on Saturday night. They attempted to steal cattle from the shed of a tea garden labourer, they said.

India: Peasant leade Akhil Gogoi gets bail in 3 cases lodged by Assam Police

Guwahati, Jul 16 (PTI) Peasant leader Akhil Gogoi was on Thursday granted bail by the Gauhati High Court in three cases lodged by the Assam Police in connection with the violent anti-Citizenship (Amendment) Act protests in December last year.

However, he will remain in jail for the cases being probed by the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

Hearing the bail applications in the three cases registered at Chabua police station in Dibrugarh district, Justice Manash Ranjan Pathak granted bail to the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) leader.

India: 638 tonnes oil, 0.46 mmscmd gas loss post Assam incident

New Delhi, Jun 13 (PTI) Oil India Ltd on Saturday said it has suffered a production loss of 638 tonnes of crude oil and 0.46 million standard cubic metres per day of natural gas following a blowout and massive fire at a well in its Assam field.

Natural gas mixed with condensate started flowing uncontrollably from one of the wells of the company-operated Baghjan fields in Tinsukia district of Assam on May 27, 2020, leading to a blowout. The well caught fire on June 8, killing two fire fighters and injuring one.

India: Thousands more evacuated from site of Indian oil well blast

TINSUKIA (India), June 12 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Around 7,000 people have been evacuated from the surrounds of a deadly oil well explosion in northeast India, authorities said, as environmentalists warned local wildlife was being hit by contamination.

Oil India engineers have been battling since May 27 to cap a blowout that this week ignited a huge ball of fire in Tinsukia district of Assam state.

India: Massive fire at Assam's Baghjan oil well

Guwahati, Jun 9 (PTI) A massive fire engulfed the damaged Baghjan oil well on Tuesday which has been spewing gas uncontrollably for the last 14 days in Assam's Tinsukia district, official sources said.

The blaze at the Oil India Ltd's oil well is so massive that it can be seen from a distance of more than two kilometres, eyewitnesses said.

Three experts from Singaporean firm Alert Disaster Control were at the blowout site and some equipment was being removed when the fire broke out in the afternoon.

India: Bangladeshi cattle smuggler lynched in Assam

Karimganj (Assam), Jun 3 (PTI) A suspected Bangladeshi cattle smuggler was lynched in Karimganj district of Assam, while his accomplice was arrested, police said on Wednesday.

Karimganj Superintendent of Police Kumar Sanjit Krishna said one of the persons involved in the mob lynching has been arrested and efforts are on to nab the others.

India: Around 200,000 People Affected By Floods In Assam

NEW DELHI, May 27 (NNN-UNI) – Around 200,000 people were affected by floods in India’s northeastern state of Assam, officials said today.

The floods hit seven districts in the state, damaging standing crops and disrupting road connectivity.

According to officials, many people have taken shelter inside relief camps at Goalpara and Tinsukia districts.

Authorities have deputed National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams in the affected areas to carry out flood relief and rescue works.
