RIO DE JANEIRO, Oct. 12 (Xinhua) -- The Brazilian government released on Friday an official statement expressing its worry over an escalation of tensions in Syria.

According to the statement, published by the country's foreign ministry, the Brazilian government is following the recent escalation of tensions in Syria's northeastern region "with great concern."

RIO DE JANEIRO, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- Brazil and Argentina signed on Thursday a free trade agreement for the automotive sector in Montevideo, Uruguay.

The deal, which was agreed upon last month, foresees free trade of vehicles starting from July 1, 2029. Brazil and Argentina will gradually phase out trade tariffs for each other in the automotive sector.

BRASILIA, Oct 1 (NNN-MERCOPRESS) — An oil spill has contaminated beaches and coastline across eight Brazilian states, the country’s environment agency said, although authorities are still stumped as to its origin.

Environmental agency Ibama said that beaches along a 3,000-kilometer coastline of Brazil’s Northeast region had been hit by the spill. It said some oil-coated birds and sea turtles had been washed up and were being treated.

RIO DE JANEIRO, Sept 22 (NNN-PRENSA LATINA) -Brazilian President, Jair Bolsonaro, signed into law, the Provisional Measure of Economic liberalisation bill, which seeks to reduce bureaucracy in business activities.

It was Bolsonaro’s first governmental act, since the beginning of the month, when he had to undergo an hernia surgery.

According to the government, the new law will reduce bureaucracy and make it easier for Brazilians to start a business and close deals.

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — A fire raced through a hospital in Rio de Janeiro, forcing staff to wheel patients into the streets on stretchers or in wheelchairs and killing at least 11 people, many of them elderly.

Four firefighters were hospitalized after battling the overnight blaze at Badim Hospital and about 90 patients were transferred to other hospitals, the fire department said. A rope made from bedsheets and used in an attempt to escape the fire still hung from an upper floor window of the hospital Friday.

FORTALEZA (Brasil), Sept 8 (NNN-MERCOPRESS) — Brazil’s Economy Minister Paulo Guedes said he will propose selling all the country’s state-owned companies because they are “dysfunctional” and should be privatized to improve the government’s finances.

In a wide-ranging address at a conference in the northeastern city of Fortaleza broadcast live on the internet, Guedes also said millions of jobs could be created as a result of the government’s plans to simplify Brazil’s complex tax system.
