India: Free Wi-fi now at 6,000 railway stations

New Delhi, May 16 (PTI) The railways has enabled free Wi-Fi at its 6000th station as the facility went live at Hazaribagh town of Jharkhand on Saturday, the national transporter said.

The railways provided Wi-Fi facility first at the Mumbai Railway station in 2016, reaching its 5000th station, at Midanpore in West Bengal.

On May 15, Jarapada station in Angul District of Odisha was also provided with Wi-Fi facility, it said on Sunday.

India: Man held for hoarding, black marketing oxygen cylinders

New Delhi, May 15 (PTI) A 29-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly indulging in black marketing of oxygen cylinders in southwest Delhi's Dwarka area, police said on Saturday.

Four oxygen cylinders have been seized from Mohit's possession, they said, adding that the car used in their transportation has also been seized.

The police said Mohit, a resident of Dwarka, owns a mobile shop.

India: No interim protection from arrest to Kalra in oxygen black marketing case: HC

New Delhi, May 14 (PTI) The Delhi High Court Friday declined to grant interim protection from arrest to Navneet Kalra, seeking anticipatory bail in connection with alleged black marketing of oxygen concentrators, agreeing with the reasons given by the trial court while denying him the relief.

A sessions court had on Thursday dismissed Kalra's anticipatory bail plea, saying the allegations against him were serious and his custodial interrogation was required to "unearth the entire conspiracy".

India: Alleged Al-Qaeda man moves court seeking nod to work as doctor in Tihar jail

New Delhi, May 13 (PTI) An alleged Al-Qaeda member who is a doctor and lodged in Tihar jail, moved a Delhi court on Thursday seeking permission to assist the prison authorities to deal with the COVID-19 cases.

In an application before Special Judge Dharmender Rana on Wednesday, the accused - Sabeel Ahmed - submitted that his experience and expertise as a medical professional would be helpful in dealing with the surge in COVID-19 cases and treatment of inmates in the central jail.

India: Dr Reddy's Lab launches Russian Sputnik V vaccine at around Rs 995.4 per dose

New Delhi, May 14 (PTI) Drug firm Dr Reddy's Laboratories on Friday said it has launched COVID vaccine Sputnik V in the Indian market with the first dose being administered in Hyderabad, as part of a limited pilot.

The company said the imported doses of the vaccine are presently priced at a maximum retail price of Rs 948, with 5 per cent GST per dose, amounting to Rs 995.4 per dose.

India: Petrol, diesel prices rise again, reach record highs

New Delhi, May 14 (PTI) Petrol and diesel prices on Friday touched record high levels across the country after rates were increased for the fourth time this week.

Petrol price was hiked by 29 paise per litre and diesel by 34 paise a litre, according to a price notification by state-owned fuel retailers.

Delhi govt to provide financial help to families which lost earning members to COVID: CM

New Delhi, May 14 (PTI) Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Friday said the Delhi government will extend financial help to families which have lost their earning members to the coronavirus and also bear the cost of education and upbringing of children orphaned by the pandemic.

He also said the number of fresh COVID-19 cases has come down to around 8,500 and the positivity rate has dipped to around 12 per cent.

But the fight against the coronavirus has not ended and there is no room for leniency, the chief minister said in an online press conference.

India receives more medical aid from abroad

New Delhi, May 13 (PTI) Germany, Japan, South Korea, Finland and Greece on Thursday delivered to India a large number of medical supplies as the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic continued to ravage various parts of the country.

Two aircraft carrying 100 oxygen concentrators arrived from Japan while South Korea sent 10,000 rapid testing kits, officials said.

A consignment of 30 oxygen concentrators, two ventilators and other medical equipment came from Italy.

India: Umar Khalid recovers from COVID-19 in Tihar jail

New Delhi, May 13 (PTI) Former JNU student Umar Khalid, who was arrested in connection with the 2020 Delhi riots, has recovered from COVID-19 in Tihar jail and returned to his cell, officials said on Thursday.

A senior official said Khalid, 33, was isolated within the Tihar jail premises after he showed symptoms of COVID-19.

India: Parents grieve as COVID-19 snatches their young ones

New Delhi, May 13 (PTI) Nine-month-old Krishu, the only child to his blind parents, succumbed to COVID-19 at a Delhi government-run hospital on Thursday, while his father, battled the deadly virus at another hospital.

On Thursday evening, Jitender Singh 'Shunty', a former MLA, buried Krishu in a corner of the Old Seemapuri cremation ground.

This was the second time in two days that Singh was burying a child so young.
