USA: Tropical system to bring heavy rain, flooding to Gulf Coast

MIAMI (AP) — Forecasters predict a tropical system will bring heavy rain, storm surge and coastal flooding to the northern Gulf Coast as early as Friday and throughout the weekend.

A tropical storm warning was in effect for parts of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida — extending from Intracoastal City, Louisiana, to the Okaloosa-Walton County line in the Florida Panhandle, according to the National Hurricane Center in Miami.

US extends deadline letting Chevron stay in Venezuela

MIAMI (AP) — The Biden administration on Tuesday gave Chevron Corp. and several other American companies six more months to continue operating in Venezuela.

The special license exempting the companies from U.S. sanctions comes as the Biden administration reviews the U.S. policy that seek to starve President Nicolás Maduro’s socialist government of badly needed oil revenue.

USA: Two killed, over 20 wounded in Miami shooting - TV report

TASS, May 30: Three gunmen opened fire on a crowd of people in Miami, Florida, killing at least two and wounding about 20 others, ABC TV channel reported citing local police on Sunday.

"I am at the scene of another targeted and cowardly act of gun violence, where over 20 victims were shot and two have sadly died," Miami-Dade police director Alfredo Ramirez III wrote on his Twitter account. "These are cold blooded murderers that shot indiscriminately into a crowd and we will seek justice. My deepest condolences to the family of the victims."

USA: White House asks court to dismiss lawsuit over drug imports

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — The Biden administration is urging a federal court to dismiss a lawsuit that could stand in the way of Florida and other states importing prescription drugs from Canada.

In a legal brief filed Friday, the White House argues that the lawsuit filed last year on behalf of U.S. pharmaceutical companies was premature because the federal government has yet to approve any importation programs.

2 dead, 10 missing as Cuban migrant vessel sinks off Florida

MIAMI, May 29 (NNN-AGENCIES) — The US Coast Guard was searching for 10 people missing off Florida after a migrant vessel with 20 Cubans capsized.

Authorities reported they had recovered two bodies near the Florida Keys and pulled eight people alive from the ocean.

The Coast Guard said on Twitter that “multiple air & surface assets” searched through the night would continue all day.

A Coast Guard crew was on a routine patrol when it spotted people in the water.

USA: NASA Mars helicopter heard humming through planet’s thin air

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — First came the amazing pictures, then the video. Now NASA is sharing sounds of its little helicopter humming through the thin Martian air.

NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California released this first-ever audio Friday, just before Ingenuity made its fifth test flight, a short one-way trip to a new airfield.

During the fourth flight a week earlier, the low hum from the helicopter blades spinning at more than 2,500 revolutions per minute is barely audible. It almost sounds like a low-pitched, faraway mosquito or other flying insect.

Restrictions easing in US and Europe amid disaster in India

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Air travel in the U.S. hit its highest mark since COVID-19 took hold more than 13 months ago, while European Union officials are proposing to ease restrictions on visitors to the continent as the vaccine sends new cases and deaths tumbling in more affluent countries.

The improving picture in many places contrasts with the worsening disaster in India.
