Mexico: Gun battle over El Chapo legacy leaves 16 dead

CULIACAN (Mexico), June 26 (NNN-AGENCIES) — The fight for control of drug kingpin Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman’s legacy spilled into the open on Thursday after a gun battle between rival Mexican gangs left 16 dead, authorities said.

The 16 men, heavily armed and wearing bullet-proof vests, died in a six-hour running shootout near the rural town of Tepuche in northwestern Sinaloa province.

Mexico earthquake death toll rises to 10

MEXICO CITY, June 25 (NNN-AGENCIES) — The death toll from a powerful earthquake that struck southern Mexico has risen to ten, the federal government said.

The 7.4-magnitude quake, which was followed by more than 1,500 aftershocks, was felt in Mexico City, some 700 kilometers away from the epicenter in Oaxaca.

It sent people fleeing their homes and workplaces and forced the closure of an oil refinery.

Oaxaca Governor Alejandro Murat said in an interview with Milenio TV earlier in the day that 2,000 homes had been damaged.

Mexico earthquake: 55 cultural heritage sites damaged

MEXICO CITY, June 25 (NNN-TELESUR) — Mexico Secretary of Culture announced that 55 cultural heritage sites were damaged during the 7.5 magnitude earthquake that struck the southern state of Oaxaca.

According to the report, Sierra’s Cathedral, in the municipality of San Juan Ozolotepec; the temple of Saint Mary of Assumption; the temple of Saint Francis, as well as Saint Matthew’s temple are among the most damaged estates.

Mexico earthquake: 4 killed in powerful 7.5-magnitude quake in Mexico

MEXICO CITY, June 24 (NNN-Xinhua) — A powerful 7.5-magnitude earthquake hit the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca on Tuesday, killing four people and injuring four others, the National Civil Protection Coordination (CNPC) said.

The epicenter of the quake, which hit at 10:29 a.m. local time (1629 GMT), was located 23 km south of La Crucecita, a Pacific Coast village in southern Oaxaca state, the National Seismological Service (SSN) said via Twitter.

Two men and a woman were among the dead in separate incidents as a result of damage to roofs and walls.

Fifteen killed in brutal attack on indigenous Mexican village

MEXICO CITY, June 23 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Assailants killed 15 inhabitants of an indigenous village in southern Mexico that has been plagued by local disputes, authorities said, in one of the most brutal attacks to shake the countryside in recent years.

State prosecutors in the state of Oaxaca said the bodies of 13 men and two women were identified as victims of the attacks over Sunday night and Monday morning in the municipality of San Mateo del Mar, east of the Pacific port of Salina Cruz.

Panama exhumes 19 bodies in search of victims of 1989 U.S. invasion

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Panamanian authorities this week finalised the exhumation of 19 bodies in a private cemetery in Panama City as part of a search for victims of the 1989 invasion by the United States, Panamanian judicial authorities said.

The bodies were exhumed from the Jardín de Paz cemetery in the capital, where they were buried 30 years ago after initially being dumped in mass graves during the December 1989 to January 1990 invasion. Some bodies remain unidentified.

Mexico's oil hedge to be pricier, but government likely doing it anyway

NEW YORK/MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Mexico will have to pay more for less coverage under its giant oil revenue insurance policy for 2021, but will likely go ahead anyway to avoid further damaging its financial standing with international investors, sources said.

The finance ministry’s billion-dollar oil hedge is the world’s largest. It has been a pillar of the budget for more than two decades for Mexico, which pumps about 1.7 million barrels per day of crude.

Mexican authorities seize over 4 tonnes of drugs at US border

MEXICO, June 14. /TASS/: Mexican authorities seized a major shipment of drugs in the city of Tijuana next to the US border, Mexican Tax Administration Service (SAT) announced Saturday.

"The SAT agents seized 301 boxes of marijuana, with the total weight of 3,607 kg, and 21 boxes of methamphetamine with the total weight of 565 kg," the statement says.

According to preliminary estimations, the seized drugs are worth about $3.5 million. The illegal shipment was discovered by an X-Ray machine.

No details were provided regarding the smugglers.

Mexico governor apologises for police abuses, searches for missing people

MEXICO CITY, June 7 (NNN-AGENCIES) — The governor of a Mexican state roiled by clashes between security forces and demonstrators apologised for police abuses and pledged to track down a number of people reported missing after the disturbances.

Enrique Alfaro, governor of the western region of Jalisco, said he was appalled that police in the state capital Guadalajara had beaten people who were demonstrating over the death of man in police custody last month.
