Suu Kyi's party demands her release as Myanmar generals tighten grip

(Reuters) - The party of Myanmar’s detained leader Aung San Suu Kyi called on Tuesday for her immediate release and for the miitary junta that seized power a day earlier to recognise her victory in an election in November.

The Nobel Peace laureate’s whereabouts remained unknown more than 24 hours after her arrest in a military takeover that derailed Myanmar’s tentative progress towards full democracy.

Myanmar's regional, state chief ministers released after detention by military

YANGON, Feb. 2 (Xinhua) -- A majority of regional and state chief ministers were released on Tuesday after the military's one-day detention, a senior military official told Xinhua.

The military detained government leaders, regional and state chief ministers and central executive members of the ruling National League for Democracy early Monday.

The detained chief ministers and members of parliament representatives of the ruling party are allowed to be freed from detention by the military on Tuesday morning, the military source said.

Myanmar: Turkish embassy urges citizens to stay indoors

In a written statement, the embassy in Naypyidaw noted that a state of emergency had been declared in the country and that the armed forces had seized power.

NAYPYITAW, Myanmar (AP) — Myanmar military television said Monday that the military was taking control of the country for one year, while reports said many of the country’s senior politicians including Aung San Suu Kyi had been detained.

A presenter on military-owned Myawaddy TV announced the takeover and cited a section of the military-drafted constitution that allows the military to take control in times of national emergency.

Myanmar military denies coup threats over vote fraud claims

Myanmar launches project for center of disease control, medical training center

YANGON, Jan. 10 (Xinhua) -- China-aided Myanmar National Center of Disease Control (CDC) and Medical Training Center project was launched in Myanmar on Sunday, according to a release from the Chinese embassy in Myanmar.

At the ceremony, Chinese Ambassador to Myanmar Chen Hai said that the project after its completion will play an important role in the emergency response, epidemic prevention, scientific research and medical personnel training, which will bring benefits to the people of Myanmar.
