Poland says police hit with stones by migrants at border

WARSAW, Poland (AP) — Polish authorities reported Sunday that a group of migrants who tried to cross the border from Belarus attacked Polish police officers with stones, hitting one in the helmet.

Police said that incident occurred Saturday evening near Kolonia Klukowicze, a village close to the border with Belarus. The impact of the stone was so forceful that “the helmet protecting the policeman’s head was damaged,” police said.

Polish police find body of Syrian man near Belarus border

BIALYSTOK, Poland, Nov 13 (Reuters) - The body of a young Syrian man has been found in Poland near the border with Belarus, Polish police said on Saturday, amid mounting international tension over a migrant crisis the European Union says has been orchestrated by Minsk.

Thousands of migrants from the Middle East are sheltering in freezing conditions on the border between Belarus and EU states Poland and Lithuania, which are refusing to let them cross.

At least eight of them have already died and fears are growing for the safety of others as harsh winter conditions set in.

Turkey halts flights for some Mideast citizens to EU’s door

WARSAW, Poland (AP) — Turkey’s Civil Aviation Authority said Friday that the country is halting airline ticket sales to Iraqi, Syrian and Yemeni citizens wanting to travel to Belarus, which in recent months became a route for migrants and refugees trying to enter the European Union.

EU leaders have put increasing pressure on airlines to stop bringing people from the Middle East to Minsk, the capital of Belarus, from where asylum-seekers seeking better lives have traveled by car to the EU’s doorstep.

Polish forces securing border and cities on Independence Day

WARSAW, Poland (AP) — Security forces in Poland were tasked Thursday with securing the nation’s eastern border amid a migration fight with Belarus while also protecting the capital and other cities during Independence Day marches organized by far-right groups that turned violent in the past.

Polish PM considers situation on Belarusian border political crisis, not migration one

WARSAW, November 10. /TASS/: Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki considers the crisis on the Belarusian-Polish border not one of migration, but a political one. He reported on Wednesday at the joint press conference with President of the European Council Charles Michel following the discussion of the current situation.

"This is not a migration crisis. This is a political one which is orchestrated to destabilize the situation in the EU," he said blaming the Belarusian and Russian authorities for what is happening.

Minister: Poland should not pay any of its EU court fines

WARSAW, Poland (AP) — Poland’s justice minister said Thursday the European Union member should not pay any of the total $1.8 million daily fines the EU’s top court imposed for Warsaw’s ignoring its injunctions on changes to the judiciary and operation of a lignite mine.

Zbigniew Ziobro called the European Court of Justice injunctions lawless. Poland insists the court has no authority over its justice system and has been ignoring its rulings.

Poland to upgrade army using funding methods first deployed to fight COVID

WARSAW, Oct 26 (Reuters) - Poland will use a mode of financing employed to fight the economic consequences of COVID-19 to help fund a large increase in military spending, the defence minister said on Tuesday, as the government seeks to modernise and expand the armed forces.

Poland's government has used bonds issued by institutions such as the national development bank BGK or state fund PFR - but secured by the state - to finance much of its spending on helping the economy through the pandemic.

Poland's PM welcomes Polish court ruling challenging primacy of EU law

WARSAW, Oct 8 (Reuters) - Poland's Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki welcomed a Polish court ruling that said some parts of European Union treaties are incompatible with the Polish constitution in a Facebook post on Friday.

The ruling, announced Thursday, challenges a pillar of European integration and sharply escalates a dispute between Brussels and Warsaw, with the European Commission saying it raised serious concerns.

Her brother, who escaped years earlier to Belgium, had saved enough money for their trip, and word was spreading online that a new migration route into Europe had opened through Belarus.
