Portugal seeks to attract worker immigration

LISBON, Aug 20 (NNN-Xinhua) — Portuguese Minister of Economy and the Sea Antonio Costa Silva said that the government will take measures to facilitate the immigration to Portugal and ease the shortage of workers, which he described as “the heart of the government’s concerns.”

Speaking at the opening of the 41st edition of the Handicraft, Tourism, Agriculture, Commerce and Industry Fair, in the city of Lagoa in southern Portugal, he admitted the “need to significantly increase the active population, because this is an extremely important asset for the country’s development.”

Heatwave scorches Europe; health warnings issued

LEIRIA, Portugal/LONDON, July 15 (Reuters) - Hundreds more people were evacuated from their homes as wildfires blistered land in France, Spain and Portugal on Friday, while officials in Europe issued health warnings for the heatwave in the coming days.

Portugal confirms first female case of monkeypox

LISBON, July 8 (Xinhua) -- The Portuguese Directorate-General for Health on Friday confirmed the first monkeypox case in a woman in Portugal.

The southern European country had reported 473 monkeypox cases, all in men, before the latest case were detected. The majority of the cases were reported in the Lisbon and Tagus Valley region, according to health authorities.

Monkeypox is common in wild animals like rodents and primates, and humans can also get infected with the virus.

Portugal: Ailing oceans in state of ’emergency’, says UN chief

LISBON, June 28 (NNN-AGENCIES) — A long-delayed conference on how to restore the faltering health of global oceans kicked off in Lisbon, with the head of the United Nations (UN) saying the world’s seas are in crisis.

“Today we face what I would call an ocean emergency,” UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres told thousands of policymakers, experts and advocates at the opening plenary, describing how seas have been hammered by climate change and pollution.

Kenya, Portugal to co-host Ocean Conference

The event seeks to scale up ocean action based on science and innovation.

Currently, the ocean is facing threats as a result of human activities.

According to the UN, the ocean covers about 70% of the Earth’s surface and is home to up to 80% of all life in the world and also generates 50% of the oxygen we need.

Portugal blocks mansion sale over 'strong conviction' it belongs to Abramovich

LISBON, May 14 (Reuters) - Portugal blocked the sale of a 10 million euro ($10.4 million) luxury house over a "strong conviction" it belonged to sanctions-hit Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, Foreign Minister Joao Cravinho said on Saturday.

The property registry of the mansion in the luxury Quinta do Lago resort in the Algarve was frozen - meaning it cannot be sold, rented or mortgaged - on March 25 at the request of the foreign ministry, a month after Russia's full invasion of Ukraine.
