Asian stocks mixed ahead of US inflation data

SINGAPORE (AP) — Asian stocks were mixed on Wednesday ahead of U.S. inflation data offering a glimpse at how the world’s largest economy is recovering.

The Nikkei 225 in Tokyo rose 0.7% to 28,069.28 and the Shanghai Composite Index added 0.1% to 3,532.23. The Kospi in South Korea gave up 0.3% to 3,234.37, however.

Hong Kong’s Hang Seng was up 0.5% at 26,724.99. Sydney’s S&P-ASX 200 advanced 0.4% to 7,594.50.

The benchmark of New Zealand rose but that of Singapore and Indonesia fell.

Singapore to tweak foreign worker policies amid local job concerns

SINGAPORE, Aug 8 (Reuters) - The Singapore government will adjust foreign worker policies to address concerns among locals over competition for jobs, even as the global business hub remains open to talent from overseas, its prime minister said on Sunday.

"We have to adjust our policies to manage the quality, numbers and concentrations of foreigners in Singapore," Lee Hsien Loong said in his National Day Message. "If we do this well, we can continue to welcome foreign workers and new immigrants, as we must.

Singapore minister warns of more COVID-19 cases as economy opens up

Singapore, Aug 7 (PTI) Singapore's Health Minister Ong Ye Kung has warned that more people will come down with COVID-19 as the trade and financial hub opens up its economy and moves towards treating the virus as an endemic.

"Our companies cannot grow if businessmen and managers cannot travel overseas to meet clients and partners. MNCs (multinational corporations) will find it hard to invest here if their people are not able to travel in and out of Singapore," the minister stressed.

Asia stocks mixed with eyes on US economic recovery

SINGAPORE (AP) — Asian stocks were mixed Thursday as traders awaited more guidance on the U.S. economic recovery.

The Nikkei 225 in Tokyo rose 0.3% to 27,678.79 while the Kospi in South Korea lost 0.1% to 3,278.13. The Hang Seng in Hong Kong added 0.2% to 26,466.58.

The Shanghai Composite index fell 0.1% to 3,472.87. Sydney’s S&P/ASX 200 gained 0.2% to 7,516.30. Shares tumbled in Singapore but rose in Malaysia and Indonesia.

Global stocks rise even as China’s manufacturing slows

SINGAPORE (AP) — Global stocks started the week higher Monday, even as China reported a slowdown in manufacturing activity and countries continued to be hammered by the delta variant.

Investors were spurred by encouraging earnings on Wall Street, which recently wrapped up another strong month. The S&P 500 notched six straight months of gains ending July.

France’s CAC 40 added 1% in early trading to 6,677.27 while Germany’s DAX gained 0.4% to 15,606.27. Britain’s FTSE 100 rose 0.9% to 7,096.59.

After pressuring telecom firms, Myanmar's junta bans executives from leaving

SINGAPORE, July 5 (Reuters) - Senior foreign executives of major telecommunications firms in Myanmar have been told by the junta that they must not leave the country without permission, a person with direct knowledge of the matter said.

A confidential order from Myanmar’s Posts and Telecommunications Department (PTD) in mid-June said senior executives, both foreigners and Myanmar nationals, must seek special authorisation to leave the country, the person said.

Singapore selects 24 private healthcare institutions to provide Sinovac vaccine

SINGAPORE, June 16 (Xinhua) -- Singapore's Ministry of Health (MOH) has selected 24 private healthcare institutions to be licensed providers of the Sinovac-CoronaVac vaccine under the Special Access Route (SAR), MOH said here Wednesday.

These providers will draw from MOH's existing stock, and can administer the vaccine to Singapore citizens, permanent residents and persons holding long-term passes who wish to take the Sinovac-CoronaVac vaccine, MOH said in a press release.

Singapore court jails man for racially offensive tweets, slurs to Indians

Singapore, Jun 8 (PTI) A 35-year old senior executive at a software company in Singapore, who made racially offensive tweets in April last year, including slurs to Indians and condemning Indian immigrants about COVID-19, was jailed for three weeks on Tuesday, a media report said.

S’pore Reviews Data On Anaphylaxis For mRNA Covid-19 Vaccines

SINGAPORE, June 1 (NNN-Bernama) — Singapore is currently reviewing local and international safety data on vaccinating persons with a history of anaphylaxis (allergic reaction) due to food and other medicines, with a view to allowing this group to receive the mRNA COVID-19 vaccines safely.

In a statement late Monday, the republic’s Expert Committee on COVID-19 Vaccination said it intended to complete this review in the next two weeks.
