India: Maharashtra aims to become USD 1 trillion economy: CM

Mumbai, Mar 11 (PTI) Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Friday said the third budget of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) was aimed at an all-around development of the state, which was in a revival mode after the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, and a step towards becoming a USD 1 trillion economy.

India: Man in Tripura awarded 20 yrs' RI for rape

Agartala, Mar 11 (PTI) A special court in Tripura's Dhalai district sentenced a man to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for raping a minor girl three years ago.

The convict, Niranjan Nagbanshi, has also been asked to pay a penalty of Rs 10,000.

Nagbanshi, a villager barged into the house of a nine-year girl Kamalpur sub-division, and raped her on August 18, 2019. Her parents were away during the incident.

Based on a complaint by the girl's family, the police had registered a case under various sections of the IPC and POCSO Act.

Indian Govt orders probe into accidental missile firing to Pakistan

New Delhi, Mar 11 (PTI) The Defence Ministry on Friday said a technical malfunction in the course of a routine maintenance led to the accidental firing of a missile on March 9.

The ministry said the missile landed in an area of Pakistan and noted that the "incident is deeply regrettable".

India: Azam Khan gets bail in job scam case

Lucknow, Mar 11 (PTI) The Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court on Friday granted bail to former UP minister Azam Khan in a case relating to a Jal Nigam recruitment scam.

Passing the order, the court observed that the counsel representing the state government failed to point out any clinching evidence against Khan.

The state counsel also could not show that Khan committed any misappropriation or financial irregularity, the court added.

India: Stapfather booked in Kota for raping minor daughter

Kota, Mar 11 (PTI) A 17-year-old girl was allegedly raped and her mother beaten up into silence by stepfather for about half a decade, police here said on Friday.

The ordeal came to an end Thursday night, when the girl and her mother finally mustered courage to report the matter to police, when the man, a daily wage labourer, tried to rape her again in a drunken state, they said.

India: 'No vaccine no fuel' drive initiated in Aurangabad

Aurangabad, Mar 11 (PTI) The administration in Maharashtra's district has started the "no vaccine no fuel" campaign to ensure that people have taken the second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, an official said on Friday.

Following a joint meeting with petroleum dealers' association, the administration has commenced the drive across the district, the official said.

India: UP CM Yogi Adityanath submits resignation to governor

Lucknow, Mar 11 (PTI) Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Friday met Governor Anandiben Patel at the Raj Bhavan here and handed over his resignation to her, paving the way for the formation of the new government.

The governor accepted Adityanath's resignation and requested him to continue as the caretaker chief minister along with his cabinet till further arrangements are made, according to an official release issued by the Raj Bhavan.

India’s COVID-19 Tally Rises To 42,984,261

NEW DELHI, Mar 11 (NNN-PTI) – India’s COVID-19 tally rose to 42,984,261 today, as 4,194 new cases were registered during the past 24 hours across the country, showed the federal health ministry’s latest data.

Besides, as many as 255 deaths due to the pandemic since yesterday morning, took the total death toll to 515,714.

There are still 42,219 active COVID-19 cases in the country, as there was a fall of 2,269 active cases during the past 24 hours. This was the 46th consecutive day when the number of active cases declined in the country.

India says it accidentally fired missile into Pakistan

NEW DELHI, March 11 (Reuters) - India said on Friday it accidentally fired a missile into Pakistan because of a "technical malfunction" during routine maintenance.

"On 9 March 2022, in the course of a routine maintenance, a technical malfunction led to the accidental firing of a missile," the government said in a statement.

"It is learnt that the missile landed in an area of Pakistan. While the incident is deeply regrettable, it is also a matter of relief that there has been no loss of life due to the accident."

NEW DELHI, March 11 (Xinhua) -- Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi got a shot in the arm when his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won four states -- Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Goa and Manipur, in the election results that came in till late Thursday night.

One state, Punjab, went to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), the current ruling party in Delhi as the country's main opposition Indian National Congress (INC) couldn't show much presence.
