Indian Muslim students say hijab ban forces choice of religion or education

UDIPI, India, Feb 12 (Reuters) - Ayesha Imthiaz, a devout Indian Muslim who considers wearing a hijab an expression of devotion to the Prophet Mohammad, says a move by her college to expel hijab-wearing girls is an insult that will force her to chose between religion and education.

"The humiliation of being asked to leave my classroom for wearing a head scarf by college officials has shaken my core belief," said the 21-year-old student from southern Karnataka's Udupi district, where protests over the head covering ban began.

Hindu hardliners protest Kashmir tweets in Modi's home state

AHMEDABAD, India, Feb 12 (Reuters) - Hundreds of Hindu nationalist protesters marched in the Indian state of Gujarat on Saturday, prompting the closure of stores owned by several multinational companies caught up in a furore over social media posts supporting disputed Kashmir.

The messages were posted last week by the Pakistani branches of firms including Hyundai Motor (005380.KS), Kia Motors (000270.KS), fast food chain Domino's Pizza (DPZ.N) and Yum Brand Inc's (YUM.N) Pizza Hut and KFC, which also operate in India.

Indian Navy, narcotics control unit seize large amount of narcotics in high seas

NEW DELHI, Feb. 12 (Xinhua) -- Indian authorities have seized drugs worth 20 billion Indian Rupees (265 million U.S. dollars) in international market from the high seas, in a joint operation conducted by the Indian Navy (IN) and the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), an official statement said on Saturday.

The narcotics seized included 529 kilograms of very high quality of Hashish, 234 kilograms of finest quality of crystal Methamphetamine and some Heroin.

According to the statement, this is the "first such operation" in which the apprehension has been made in high seas.

India: BJP Minister's son accused of killing farmers moves HC about his bail order

Lucknow, Feb 11 (PTI) Union Minister of State for Home Ajai Mishra Teni's son Ashish Mishra moved the Allahabad High Court on Friday seeking rectification of his bail order in the case of Lakhimpur Kheri violence.

Ashish Mishra moved the Lucknow bench of the high court seeking insertion of sections 302 for murder and 120 B for criminal conspiracy which were inadvertently not mentioned in the high court order granting him the bail.

India: PM Modi distracting Goans from real issues: Rahul

Panaji, Feb 11 (PTI) Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of distracting the attention of people of Goa from real issues like environment and employment.

Criticising Modi over his statement that if Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru wanted, Goa could have been liberated "within hours" in 1947 when India attained independence, Gandhi said the prime minister does not understand the situation of those times and what was happening post-World War II.

India: BJP gives up confrontation with Nitish

Patna, Feb 11 (PTI) The BJP in Bihar, which has been on a collision course with Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's JD(U) for some time, on Friday asserted that the coalition government will complete its full five-year term.

State minister Syed Shahnawaz Hussain, a national spokesman of the party, made the averment here at a press conference he addressed jointly with Sanjay Jaiswal, the Bihar BJP president.

"The government will complete its five years in power without any ifs or buts ( bina kintu parantu ke'), said Hussain.

India: Students protest demanding reopening of Jamia campus

New Delhi, Feb 11 (PTI) Student outfits protested on Friday to demand the resumption of offline academic activity at Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) and were assured by university officials that it will soon be reopened in a phased manner.

The left-affiliated All India Students' Association (AISA), along with other student outfits and JMI students, demanded reopening of the campus.
