India: Suspended judge held in sodomy case in Rajasthan

Jaipur, Nov 3 (PTI) The Bharatpur police on Wednesday arrested a judge, who was earlier suspended after being booked for allegedly sexually exploiting a 14-year-old boy.

Bharatpur SP Devendra Kumar said the suspended judge was called for interrogation and was later arrest.

"The interrogation and arrest were as per the guidelines of the Supreme Court," he said.

India: Delay in bail orders affects liberty, needs redressal at 'war footing': SC judge

New Delhi, Nov 3 (PTI) Supreme Court judge Justice D Y Chandrachud has termed the delay in communicating bail orders to prison authorities as a very serious deficiency and stressed the need to address it on war footing as it touches the human liberty of every under-trial prisoner.

Justice Chandrachud was speaking at an online event organised by the Allahabad High Court to inaugurate virtual courts and e-Sewa kendras' to facilitate online legal assistance to litigants.

India: Father of a rape survivor dies in mysterious conditions

Kanpur: Father of a rape survivor died under mysterious circumstances in Kanpur.

The relatives took the body to his native village for the last rites on Tuesday.

But as soon as police came to know about it, they reached the village and took the body in their custody and sent it for a post-mortem.

According to the police, the last rites will take place only after the post-mortem examination.

The rape survivor had accused a retired inspector Dinesh Tripathi, a resident of Prayagraj, of rape.

India: Kashmiri leader Mehbooba Mufti placed under house arrest - again

Srinagar, Nov 1 (PTI) PDP president Mehbooba Mufti was on Monday put under house arrest to prevent her from visiting Anantnag to meet the family of a youth who was killed in cross-firing between security forces and militants last week, a party leader claimed.

The Peoples Democratic Party leader claimed that the police have locked the main gate of Mehbooba's house.

A police official said the PDP chief was not allowed to visit Anantnag due to security reasons.

India: UP govt to light 12 lakh lamps in Ayodhya

Ayodhya, Nov 1 (PTI) The Uttar Pradesh government will light 12 lakh earthen lamps, nine lakh of which will be lit on the banks of the Saryu, bettering the previous Diwali record.

Last year, over six lakh earthen lamps were lit during the "Deepotsav" to celebrate the festival, creating a world record.

According to government statement, the staging of Ram Lilas, a 3D holographic display, laser show and fireworks will be part of the five-day-long celebrations, beginning Monday.

Zika virus case in Kanpur goes up to eleven presently

India: Beware of pickpockets: Rahul on rising fuel prices

New Delhi, Nov 1 (PTI) Congress leader Rahul Gandhi hit out at the Centre on Monday over the rise in fuel prices and said one should beware of "pickpockets".

"Beware of pickpockets," he said in a tweet in Hindi, using the hashtag "#TaxExtortion".

The former Congress chief cited a news report along with his tweet that said the petrol prices in some states have crossed Rs 120 a litre and that the Centre collected Rs 2.3 lakh crore in 2018-19 and Rs 2.58 lakh crore in 2017-18 by way of fuel taxes.

WhatsApp banned over 2.2 mln Indian accounts in Sep

New Delhi, Nov 1 (PTI) More than 2.2 million Indian accounts were banned by WhatsApp while 560 grievance reports were received by the messaging platform in September, according to its compliance report.

In its latest report released on Monday, WhatsApp said 2,209,000 Indian accounts on the platform were banned in September.

An Indian account is identified via a '+91' phone number, it added.

India: Constitution in danger, tension in country: Gehlot

Jaipur, Nov 1 (PTI) Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Monday targeted the BJP government at the Centre, alleging that the Constitution is in danger and tension is prevailing in the country.

The chief minister made the claim at a programme on the launch of a membership drive by the Congress.

"The forces which have come to power are communal and fascist forces. They have no faith in democracy. They come to power in the name of religion," Gehlot alleged.

India: Bengal bypolls: TMC leads in all four seats

Kolkata, Nov 2 (PTI) The Trinamool Congress was leading on Tuesday in all four assembly seats where bypolls were held on October 30, as per the initial trends.

The counting of votes to Khardah, Santipur, Gosaba and Dinhata began at 8 am amid tight security.

After the first round of counting, the TMC was leading in all the seats, Election Commission officials said.

"Counting of votes is happening smoothly. There is no report of any untoward incident till 9 am," an official of the poll panel said.
