FIFA lifts ban on Kenya’s scandal-hit national football body

NAIROBI, Nov 28 (NNN-AGENCIES) — FIFA has lifted a ban on Kenya’s national football federation, following the government’s decision to reinstate the body after disbanding it over corruption allegations, the country’s sports minister said Monday.

In February, football’s world governing body suspended the Football Kenya Federation (FKF), citing government interference after the authorities shut down the organisation last year over graft allegations.

Kenya receives 25,000 metric tonnes of wheat from Ukraine

NAIROBI, Nov 23 (NNN-KBC) — Kenya has received a donation of 25,000 metric tonnes of wheat from Ukraine that will be distributed to Counties severely affected by the ongoing drought. 

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua says the donation was presented to his office by the Ukrainian Ambassador to Kenya Andriy Pravednyk who paid him a courtesy call. 

Gachagua said that Ukraine continues to play a key role in global food security amidst the ongoing Ukraine-Russia conflict. 

IFC Launched 225-Million-USD Platform To Boost Start-ups In Africa, Asia

NAIROBI, Nov 16 (NNN-KBC) – The World Bank’s private sector lending arm, the International Finance Corporation (IFC), launched a 225-million-U.S.-dollar platform, that seeks to strengthen venture capital ecosystems in Africa, the Middle East, Central Asia and Pakistan.

IFC said, the platform will provide funds that will be invested in early-stage companies, that address development challenges through technological innovations in climate, health care, education, e-commerce and agriculture, as a means to build the digital economy of the beneficiary countries.

Building collapses in Kenya’s capital, killing three people

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — At least three people died when a building collapsed in Kenya’s capital Nairobi, authorities said Wednesday.

Six other people were rescued from the rubble and are being treated at a hospital in the Kasarani suburb, where the multi-story building is located.

The residential building was under construction and had shown signs of weakness including visible cracks before it collapsed, witnesses told local media.

Ethiopia asserts 70% of Tigray now under military control

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — Ethiopia’s lead negotiator in ongoing peace talks asserted Friday that 70% of the country’s northern Tigray region is now under military control and aid deliveries have resumed to the area, but there is no immediate confirmation from aid workers or Tigray spokesmen.

National Security Adviser Redwan Hussein tweeted the information as the talks continued in neighboring Kenya, and as the United States applied pressure on Ethiopia’s government to swiftly deliver aid and basic services.

Tanzania: Small passenger plane crashes into Lake Victoria

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — A small passenger plane crashed Sunday morning into Lake Victoria on approach to an airport in Tanzania, and regional authorities said at least three people died.

Local authorities said 26 of the 43 people on board the Precision Air flight from the coastal city of Dar es Salaam were rescued and taken to a hospital. The plane was headed to Bukoba Airport.

Precision Air is a Tanzanian airline company.

News reports showed photos of the plane mostly submerged in the lake.

Tanzania says Mount Kilimanjaro fire largely contained

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — The fire burning on Mount Kilimanjaro for almost two weeks has been largely contained after hundreds of military personnel were deployed to help, Tanzania’s prime minister said Thursday.

The blaze destroyed 33 square kilometers (nearly 13 square miles) on Africa’s tallest and most famous mountain, Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa said.

The fire started on Oct. 21 near the Karanga camp, which is popular among the thousands of hikers who attempt the climb of the mountain every year.

UNHCR urges world to help Horn of Africa tackle climate crises

NAIROBI, Oct. 27 (Xinhua) -- The UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi has called on global leaders to spare no efforts in helping countries in the Horn of Africa to break the cycle of conflict and climate crises.

Grandi, who on Tuesday concluded a five-day visit to Somalia and Kenya, said despite urgent calls from humanitarian agencies active in Somalia, the catastrophic and multifaceted consequences are largely unnoticed as the world's attention remains elsewhere.

Uganda says two new Ebola cases confirmed in Kampala hospital

NAIROBI, Oct 23 (Reuters) - Two more people in an isolation unit of Uganda's main hospital have tested positive for Ebola, bringing total cases recorded in the facility to five, the health minister said on Sunday.

The five confirmed cases in Kampala are the first known transmission of the virus in the city, coming days after the information ministry said the country's Ebola outbreak was coming under control and was expected to be over by the end of the year.
