Turkish soldier killed in northern Iraq

2 October 2022; MEMO: A Turkish soldier was killed in a terror attack in northern Iraq, authorities said Saturday, Anadolu Agency reported.

Yusuf Atas was injured after terrorists opened "harassing fire" in the Operation Claw-Lock zone, according to the Turkish National Defense Ministry.

He later died at a hospital.

The ministry conveyed condolences to Atas's family, the Turkish Armed Forces, and the nation.

Turkey rejects Russia's annexation of Ukrainian territory

ISTANBUL, Oct 1 (Reuters) - Turkey's Foreign Ministry said on Saturday it rejects Russia's annexation of four regions in Ukraine, adding the decision is a "grave violation" of international law.

Turkey, a NATO member, has conducted a diplomatic balancing act since Russia invaded Ukraine on Feb. 24. Ankara opposes Western sanctions on Russia and has close ties with both Moscow and Kyiv, its Black Sea neighbours. It has also criticised Russia's invasion and sent armed drones to Ukraine.

Turkiye to take recognition of northern Cyprus to UN General Assembly

30 Sep 2022; MEMO: Turkiye is preparing to take the Cyprus issue to the UN General Assembly in order to remove the obstacles to recognition of the breakaway state in the north, Reuters reports.

According to the report, the framework of the strategy for recognising the pseudo-state was drawn up at the regular meeting of the National Security Council (NSC) in July.

Fed's aggressive rate hikes may foreshadow global recession, Turkish economists warn

ISTANBUL, Sept. 30 (Xinhua) -- A stronger U.S. dollar arising from the Federal Reserve's aggressive interest rate hikes has intensified pressure on both developed and developing countries, and may lead to a global recession, Turkish economists have said.

The Fed's rate policies in its own pursuit of 2-percent inflation target have reinforced the greenback but caused a series of troubles worldwide, Mustafa Sonmez, a Turkish economist and writer, told Xinhua.

Erdogan reveals intelligence talks with Syria regime

30 Sep 2022; MEMO: The Turkish intelligence service has been conducting negotiations with the Syrian regime of Bashar Al-Assad in Damascus to define a "road map" on several issues, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has revealed.

"Our intelligence service is conducting negotiations there [Damascus], and we will define our road map based on the results," Erdogan said during an interview with CNN Turk on Wednesday.

Turkiye to deploy more troops in northern Cyprus

30 Sep 2022; MEMO: Turkiye will deploy more troops to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus to protect Turkish Cypriots, Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said yesterday, Anadolu news agency reported.

Speaking at a youth gathering in Pamukkale province, Cavusoglu said Ankara is determined to protect the rights and interests of Turkish Cypriots in the Eastern Mediterranean and Aegean "even if the whole world stands against it".

Turkiye: explosion in Mersin yesterday, police officers injured

27 Sep 2022; MEMO: One Turkish police officer was killed, late on Monday, and another was injured after a bomb exploded near a residence that houses police in the Mezitli district of Mersin province, Interior Minister, Suleyman Soylu confirmed, Anadolu News Agency reports.

According to the Turkish Minister, the two females that carried out the attack first shot at the police officer and, later, detonated bombs that were attached to them.
