Lebanon: Druze leader Jumblatt says Iran gains as Arabs abandon it

28 Jan 2022; MEMO: Druze leader, Walid Jumblatt, said on Thursday that Iran had gained influence in Lebanon because Arab states had abandoned the country, stepping up criticism of the Iran-backed Hezbollah and suggesting Tehran wants to erase the Lebanese state, Reuters reports.

One of Lebanon's main politicians, Jumblatt was speaking days after leading Sunni Muslim politician, Saad Al-Hariri, withdrew from political life, citing Iranian influence as one of the reasons he saw no hope of positive change.

Armenian Foreign Minister to visit Turkey

28 Jan 2022; MEMO: Armenian Foreign Minister, Ararat Mirzoyan, is to visit Turkey in March, his Turkish counterpart said on Thursday, as the neighbours work to mend ties after decades of animosity, Reuters reports.

Turkey has had no diplomatic or commercial ties with its eastern neighbour since the 1990s. The two are at odds over several issues, primarily the 1.5 million people Armenia says were killed by Ottoman forces in 1915.

Limited gas flow test starts from Iran to Turkey

29 Jan 2022; MEMO: Natural gas supply testing from Iran to Turkey has started in limited quantities, which will alleviate natural gas cuts to the country's industrial sector from 31 January, Turkey's state pipeline operator BOTAS said late Friday and Anadolu News Agency reports.

Iran had confirmed it would not send natural gas to Turkey, starting from 20 January, for 10 days due to technical problems at the Gurbulak gas entry point on the Turkey-Iran border.

Adani Total Gas wins 14 city gas licenses, IOC 8

New Delhi, Jan 28 (PTI) A joint venture of billionaire Gautam Adani-run group's gas arm and Total of France on Friday walked away with the most 14 licenses to retail CNG to automobiles and piped cooking gas to households in the latest city gas bidding round, according to oil regulator PNGRB.

Adani Total Gas Ltd won city gas rights in 14 out of the 52 geographical areas (GAs) for which Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) declared results on Friday.

India: Google to invest USD 1 bn in Airtel; to buy 1.28 pc stake for USD 700 mn

New Delhi, Jan 28 (PTI) Internet giant Google will invest USD 1 billion in telecom major Bharti Airtel which includes equity investment as well as a corpus for potential commercial agreements, to be identified and agreed on mutually agreeable terms over the course of the next five years.

Google made the investment as part of its Google for India Digitization Fund.

Global gold demand rises 10% to 4,021 tonnes in 2021: WGC

Mumbai, Jan 28 (PTI) Global gold demand rose 10 per cent to 4,021.3 tonnes in 2021 on account of a massive 50 per cent surge in year-on-year demand -- a 10-quarter high -- during the December quarter, a report by the World Gold Council (WGC) said.

The overall gold demand during 2020, which was impacted following Covid-19 related disruptions, stood at 3,658.8 tonnes, the WGC said in its 'Gold Demand Trends 2021' Report.

Energy crisis growing in Turkey: Industry hit by power cut due to Iran gas flow

26 Jan 2022; MEMO: Turkish industry has been hit by power cut due to energy crisis between Iran and Turkey, Financial Times reports on Wednesday.

According to the report, the Turkish government said it would impose three days of power cuts on heavy industrial users this week.

Last week, it was announced by Turkish media that gas flow from Iran to Turkey had stopped due to technical problem.
