THE HAGUE (Reuters) - Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi on Wednesday rejected accusations of genocide committed against her country’s Muslim Rohingya minority as “incomplete and misleading”, and said the case should not be heard by the U.N.’s highest court.

The Nobel Peace laureate, speaking during three days of hearings at the International Court of Justice, challenged allegations in a lawsuit brought by Gambia last month accusing Myanmar of violating the 1948 Genocide Convention.

THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) — The U.N.’s highest court on Tuesday begins a hearing into allegations of genocide in Myanmar over the military campaign against the Rohingya minority, with leader Aung San Suu Kyi set to defend those who once held her under house arrest.

Myanmar’s military began a harsh counterinsurgency campaign against the Rohingya in August 2017 in response to an insurgent attack. More than 700,000 Rohingya fled to neighboring Bangladesh to escape what has been called an ethnic cleansing campaign involving mass rapes, killings and the torching of homes.

THE HAGUE, Dec 6 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi will head a team of lawyers to hearings at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague next week to defend the country against accusations of genocide against the Rohingya Muslims.

The ICJ, also called the World Court, is the highest United Nations legal body, established in 1945 to deal with disputes between states. It should not be confused with the treaty-based International Criminal Court, also in The Hague, which handles war crimes cases against individuals.

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - The Netherlands aims to rake in at least 900 million euros ($992 million) from its first auction of bandwidth for 5G networks, it said on Thursday, adding some equipment suppliers could be banned from the new networks if they raise security concerns.

European governments are grappling with how to treat Huawei Technologies Co Ltd after the United States alleged the Chinese telecoms supplier’s equipment could be exploited by Beijing for spying. Huawei strongly denies the allegations.

AMSTERDAM, Dec 3 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Russia has refused a Dutch request to hand over a suspect in the downing of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17, in violation of European law, prosecutors said.

Volodymyr Tsemakh, a Ukrainian national, had been identified as a suspect by the Netherlands, which is leading an investigation into the disaster on July 17, 2014 which killed all 298 people onboard. Two-thirds of the passengers were Dutch.

THE HAGUE, Dec. 1 (Xinhua) -- No indications have yet been found that the suspect of the stabbing in The Hague on Friday had a terrorist motive, the police of The Hague said on Sunday.

The suspect, a 35-year-old man without a permanent residence, was arrested around 5:40 p.m. local time on Saturday at a homeless shelter in the center of The Hague. He was transferred to a police station where he is being interrogated.

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - Dutch police hunted on Saturday for an unidentified suspect who stabbed three youths on a street in the center of The Hague on Friday during one of the busiest shopping evenings of the year.

Investigators were keeping “all scenarios open” on the perpetrator’s identity and motive, police spokeswoman Marije Kuiper said.

The people injured were discharged from hospital late on Friday.

Police have not released any information about the suspect’s appearance, but said an initial description of him as a man in his 40’s was wrong.

THE HAGUE, Nov 29 (NNN-AGENCIES) — A bid by Russia to block funding for a new team that will identify culprits behind toxic attacks in Syria failed with member states at the global chemical watchdog overwhelmingly approving a new budget.

Moscow and its allies were trying to block next year’s budget for the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons – a move which would potentially have left the entire agency unable to operate – if it included money for the new Identification and Investigations Team (IIT).

THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) — An assailant stabbed three people Friday night in a busy shopping district in the Netherlands, and police were searching for the suspect, authorities said.

The attack came just hours after a man wearing a fake explosive vest stabbed several people in London, killing two, before he was tackled by members of the public and then fatally shot by officers. Police treated it as a terrorist attack.

A Dutch police spokeswoman said it was too early to establish a motive for the attack in The Hague.
