Jordan: popular 'Russia solidarity' committee launched

04 April 2022; MEMO: A group of individuals and organisations in Jordan announced the launch of the Jordanian People's Committee for Solidarity with Russia yesterday, RIA Novosti has reported.

The committee was created "after several meetings and discussions to counter "imperialist ambitions, strengthen the independence of Jordan and develop Jordanian-Russian" links and relations.

Jordan Prince Hamzah renounces royal title

04 April 2022; MEMO: Jordan's Prince Hamzah Bin Al-Hussein, the former crown prince, announced yesterday that he has relinquished his royal title in protest over the kingdom's current policies, Reuters reported.

In a letter posted on Twitter, Prince Hamzah said he was giving up his title because his values "are not in line with the approaches, trends, and modern methods of our institutions."

Jordan: Thousands march in support of Palestine

02 April 2022; MEMO: Thousands of protesters in Jordan marched on Friday in Amman, chanting slogans in support of the Palestinian resistance and rejecting Arab normalisation with Israel, Anadolu Agency reported.

Jordanians gathered in front of the Grand Husseini Mosque in central Amman following Friday prayer, while Secretary-General of the Islamic Action Front Murad Adayleh and former Islamic MP Ali Abul Sukkar headed the march.

U.S special envoy says Yemen truce paves way to end conflict

AMMAN, April 2 (Reuters) - A United Nations-led truce in Yemen is a "decisive moment" in the near seven-year conflict and offers hope the warring parties and international community can bring a lasting peace to the devastated country, a senior U.S. official told Reuters.

U.S. Special Envoy for Yemen Tim Lenderking said the U.N.- brokered two-month truce between a Saudi-led coalition and the Houthi group aligned with Iran, which comes into effect on Saturday, was a "first step" to a permanent ceasefire.

Jordan, Saudi Sign Agreements To Boost Cooperation Across Sectors

AMMAN, Mar 30 (NNN-PETRA) – Jordan and Saudi Arabia, yesterday signed cooperation agreements, in the fields of trade, financial markets and transportation, said Jordanian Ministry of Industry and Trade Spokesperson, Yanal Barmawi.

The deals, in addition to two agreements in media and youth cooperation, were signed during meetings of the Jordanian-Saudi Joint Committee, held in Amman, Barmawi said.

Jordan’s King Urges Respecting Muslims’ Right To Worship At Al-Aqsa Mosque

AMMAN, Mar 30 (NNN-PETRA) – Jordanian King, Abdullah II, yesterday told visiting Israeli defence minister that, maintaining calm requires respecting the rights of Muslims to worship at the al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem.

During the meeting with Benny Gantz, King Abdullah called for stronger efforts, to restart serious and effective peace talks between the Palestinians and Israel, to achieve peace on the basis of the two-state solution, the Royal Hashemite Court said in a statement.

Jordan and Israel leaders urge calm after historic meeting following spike in violence

AMMAN, March 30 (Reuters) - Jordan's King Abdullah called for calm following a historic summit with Israeli President Isaac Herzog on Wednesday after the sharpest spike in street violence in years stoked fears of a wider escalation ahead of the holy Muslim month of Ramadan.

Abdullah told Herzog after receiving him in the Husseiniya Palace in the first official visit by an Israeli head of state that peace was more pressing now to end a conflict that he said had "lasted too long".

Israel Defence Minister meets Jordan's King Abdullah in Amman

29 March 2022; MEMO: Israeli Defence Minister, Benny Gantz, met Jordan's King Abdullah in Amman on Tuesday, in an apparent joint effort to lower Israeli-Palestinian tensions as the Muslim holy month of Ramadan approaches, Reuters reports.

Their talks focused on "regional and security challenges", an Israeli statement said.

The meeting followed a two-day summit in Israel attended by the Foreign Ministers of the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Morocco and Egypt and US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken.

Jordan Denounces Israeli Settlers’ Storming Of Hotel In Jerusalem

AMMAN, Mar 29 (NNN-PETRA) – Jordan yesterday condemned Israeli settlers, for storming into a hotel, owned by the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate, in East Jerusalem.

Foreign Ministry Spokesman, Haitham Abu Al-Foul, reaffirmed Jordan’s rejection of all moves aimed to change the historical and legal status quo in East Jerusalem, including the Muslim and Christian properties and endowments, highlighting the country’s support for Jerusalemites and the Orthodox Church, against settlers’ attacks.

Jordan Held Local Elections Amid Strict Measures Against COVID-19

AMMAN, Mar 23 (NNN-PETRA) – Jordan held governorate and municipal council elections yesterday, with strict measures in place, to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

The final turnout of the local elections was 29.6 percent, with more than 1.36 million votes collected, in 1,850 polling stations across the kingdom, according to a statement released by the Independent Election Commission (IEC).

Precautions were taken to ensure social distancing, and unvaccinated voters were not allowed to cast their ballots, according to the IEC statement.
