India: BJP wins one seat in Kashmir DDC elections for first time

Srinagar, Dec 22 (PTI) The BJP on Tuesday won an election for the first time from any seat in Kashmir while facing regional heavyweights like the National Conference and the PDP.

Aijaz Hussain won the Khonmoh-II District Development Council seat in Srinagar, while Aijaz Ahmad Khan gave the party more reason to cheer by winning the Tulail seat in Bandipora district.

Crediting the policies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and hard work of party workers for his success, Hussain said the DDC election was a fight between the BJP and rest of the parties.

India: Polling underway for fifth phase of DDC polls in J-K

Srinagar, Dec 10 (PTI) Polling for the fifth phase of the District Development Council (DDC) elections in Jammu and Kashmir began on a dull note as winter chill kept most people indoors early on Thursday, officials said.

The polling for 37 DDC seats -- 17 in the Kashmir division and 20 in the Jammu division -- began at 7 AM but few people turned up at polling stations in the valley due to freezing weather conditions, they said.

According to the officials, voter turnout is expected to pick up later in the day. The polling is scheduled to conclude at 2 PM.

India: J-K BJP expels 10 members for anti-party activities

Jammu, Dec 3 (PTI) The Jammu and Kashmir BJP on Thursday expelled 10 members for anti-party activities after eight of them contested the District Development Council (DCC) polls and the panchayat by-elections in the union territory against the party's official candidates.

They were found guilty of anti-party activities and expelled on the recommendations of the disciplinary committee of the party, BJP functionaries said.

India: Militant attack in J-K, two security personnel killed

Srinagar, Nov 26 (PTI) Two security force personnel were killed in a militant attack on a quick reaction team (QRT) at Parimpora on the outskirts of the city on Thursday, police said.

The ultras opened fire on the security forces at Khushipora in Parimpora area, a police official said.

Security forces have cordoned off the area and launched a search operation to track down the assailants, he said.

India: US embassy delegation meets NC leader in Jammu

Jammu, Nov 24 (PTI) A delegation of the US embassy in Delhi met National Conference provincial president Devender Singh Rana here Tuesday and discussed issues of common interest, the party said.

Minister counsellor for political affairs in the United States embassy Graham Mayer and senior political advisor A Sukesh interacted with Rana on a varied range of subjects like environment, tourism, academics and sharing of knowledge and ideas aimed at promoting universal brotherhood, amity and tranquillity between the communities, a party release said.

India: Cross-border drug smuggling suspect dies at Jammu police station

Jammu, Nov 23 (PTI) A 45-year-old man, who was recently arrested for his alleged involvement in cross-border narcotic smuggling, died due to some "health problems" at a police station here on Monday, an official said.

Kuldeep Kumar, a resident of Akhnoor, was lodged in the lockup at R S Pura police station and complained of chest pain before losing his consciousness. He was rushed to the Government Medical College (GMC) hospital, where he was declared 'brought dead', according to the officer.

India: Soldier killed in Pak firing along LoC in J-K's Rajouri

Jammu, Nov 21 (PTI) A soldier of the Indian Army was killed on Saturday as Pakistani forces opened fire on forward posts along the Line of Control (LoC) in Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir, officials said.

The unprovoked firing from across the border in Lam area of Nowshera sector took place around 1 am, resulting in critical injuries to a havaldar, who died later, the officials said.

The Indian Army retaliated strongly to silence the Pakistani guns, and cross-border firing between the two sides continued for quite some time, they added.

India: J&K HC orders release of separatist leader Masarat Alam Bhat

Srinagar, Nov 18 (PTI) The Jammu and Kashmir High Court has quashed the detention order of separatist leader Masarat Alam Bhat and directed the administration to release him forthwith if he is not required in any other case.

A division bench of Justice Saneev Kumar and Justice Rajnesh Oswal issued the direction on Tuesday after noticing that the detention order against Bhat has outlived its life and the writ petition has become infructuous.
