India: Shops, vehicles to operate in Meghalaya from Monday

Shillong, May 10 (PTI) Apart from Shillong which currently has two active COVID-19 cases, the Meghalaya government has allowed shops to reopen and 50 per cent vehicles to ply across the state from Monday.

The decision was taken at a review meeting chaired by Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, official sources said.

"The deputy commissioners and district transport officers have been asked to work out the modalities for regulating (public and private transport) on a rotation basis," Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong said on Saturday.

Shillong, Apr 30 (PTI) The Meghalaya government on Thursday declared 10 of the state's 11 districts as 'green zones' and allowed inter-district movement there, a op official said.

The decision was taken as no COVID-19 case was reported from these districts, he said.

India: Doctor tests positive, first COVID-19 case in Meghalaya

Shillong, Apr 13 (PTI) A senior doctor here has tested positive for COVID-19 in Meghalaya, the first coronavirus case in the state, Health Minister A L Hek said on Monday.

The samples of the doctor who owns a private hospital here tested positive for COVID-19 on Monday at the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Science, the minister said.

The doctor has no recent travel history.

India: 3 arrested for killing and eating leopard cat in Meghalaya

Tura (Meghalaya), Mar 16 (PTI) Three persons have been arrested after photographs of them trapping, killing and eating a leopard cat near their village in Meghalaya's North Garo Hills district went viral on the social media, wildlife officials said on Monday.

With leopard cats being an endangered species, the photographs posted by one of the poachers triggered a social media outrage leading to their arrests, they said.

India: Man, out on bail in elder daughter's rape case rapes younger one

Tura (Meghalaya), Mar 13 (PTI) A teenage girl was sexually assaulted by her father who was out on bail after spending years in prison for allegedly raping his other daughter and impregnating her, the Meghalaya Police said on Friday.

The incident happened near Dalu in the state's West Garo Hills district, officials said.

India: Two baby girls lose their fathers in Meghalaya anti-CAA violence

Shillong, Mar 2 (PTI) Two baby girls, one of them just four-month-old, have lost their fathers in the violence between tribal and non-tribal groups over implementation of Inner Line Permit (ILP) in Meghalaya.

The four-month-old's father, Uphas Uddin, was killed in the early hours of Sunday by three unidentified assailants who broke into his home at Pyrkan village in Meghalayas East Khasi Hills district and stabbed him.

India: Meghalaya violence during anti-CAA rally: Man stabbed, shops set ablaze

Shillong, Mar 2 (PTI) A 28-year-old man was stabbed with a broken glass bottle in the Mawprem area here, as sporadic incidents of violence were reported from across Meghalaya in the aftermath of clashes between tribal and non-tribal groups that has left three people dead, police said on Monday.

Four shops rented to non-tribal businessmen were set on fire in Photkroh town in South West Khasi Hills District in the early hours, they said.

Police said nobody was injured in the incident.

Joint India-Bangladesh military exercise concludes

Umroi (Meghalaya), Feb 16 (PTI) A joint military exercise between the armies of India and Bangladesh concluded in Meghalaya's Umroi on Sunday, defence officials said.

A total of 150 personnel each from the two armies had taken part in the ninth edition of the two-week-long 'SAMPRITI' military exercise conducted at the Joint Training Node here, Defence spokesperson Ratnakar Singh said.

India: Meghalaya CM seeks complete exemption of state from CAA

Shillong, Jan 11 (PTI) Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Saturday demanded that the entire state, including the non-scheduled areas, be exempted from the purview of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019.

He urged the Centre to take measures for protecting the indigenous communities of the Northeast.

India: Bandh against CAB affects normal life in Meghalaya

Shillong, Dec 10 (PTI) Normal life was affected in Meghalaya on Tuesday due a statewide called by the Khasi Students Union (KSU), a constituent of the NESO, to protest against the Citizenship Amendment Bill.

Shops, markets and business establishments kept shutters down, while educational and financial institutions remained closed for the day, officials said.

Government offices were open but recorded less than 10 per cent attendance, they said.
