India: AIDS serious problem, should be tackled on war-footing

Aizawl, Feb 17 (PTI) Mizoram Governor PS Sreedharan Pillai on Monday called for concerted efforts to control and fight the growing HIV/AIDS prevalence in the state.

Delivering his customary speech on the opening day of the Assembly's Budget Session, Pillai, who assumed charge in October last year, said AIDS was a serious problem in the state, which "should be tackled on a war-footing".

India: BSF recovers huge cache of arms in Mizoram

Aizawl, Dec 25 (PTI) The BSF on Wednesday seized a huge cache of arms from Parva village near the Mizoram-Myanmar border, officials said.

The stockpile includes M-16, AK-56 and AK-47 rifles, a pistol and 954 rounds of live ammunition, they said.

The arms, which were recovered in Mizoram's Lawngtlai district, are suspected to have belonged to cadres of the Arakan Liberation Army (ALA), an insurgent group in Myanmar, the officials said.

India: Man gets 20 years in prison for raping woman

Aizawl, Nov 14 (PTI) A court in Mizoram's Lunglei district has sentenced a man to 20 years imprisonment for raping a married woman.

District and Sessions Judge Joel Joseph Denga on Monday convicted J Lalruatsanga of Rulkual village for raping the woman and ordered him to undergo 20 years imprisonment. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 1,000 on the convict.

India, Japan to hold joint military exercise from Oct 19

New Delhi, Oct 12 (PTI) A joint military exercise Dharma-Guardian 2019 will be conducted between India and Japan at the Counter Insurgency and Jungle Warfare School, Vairengte in Mizoram from October 19 to November 2, an official statement said.

The Indian Army and the Japanese Ground Self Defence Forces (JGSDF), comprising 25 soldiers each, will participate in the exercise with an aim to share experience gained during various counter-terrorism operations in respective countries.

The exercise is an annual training event which is being conducted in India since 2018.

India: 219 Myanmarese refugees deported

Aizawl, Jul 3 (PTI) The Lawngtlai district administration and the Assam Rifles have deported 219 refugees from Myanmar, who had taken shelter in Mizoram's Hmawngbuchhuah village, a top district official said on Wednesday.

Lawngtlai Deputy Commissioner Shashanka Ala told PTI that the "mission" (deportation) was accomplished on Tuesday as directed by the Centre.

"All the refugees have reached the other side of the border from Laitlang village in Mizoram to Vairang village in Myanmar...on Tuesday," she said.

India: Mizoram police rescues 8 minor Rohingya girls

Aizawl, Jun 18 (PTI) Eight Rohingya girls, suspected to be victims of human trafficking, were rescued from a village near the Mizoram-Myanmar border in Champai district, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police of Northern Range Lalbiakthanga Khiangte said here Tuesday.

The girls, all of them minors, were rescued from Dungtkang village on Monday, the DIG said, adding that they were being taken to Myanmar from Bangladesh via India. Khiangte told PTI that the girls were produced before the chief judicial magistrate on Tuesday.

India: Zoramthanga not to attend Modi's swearing-in ceremony

Aizawl, May 30 (PTI) Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga will not attend the swearing-in ceremony of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi on Thursday, an official at the Chief Minister's Office said.

Zoramthanga, who is also the president of the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF), will not be present at the oath- taking ceremony due to "tight official engagements", Lalhmansanga, personal secretary to the chief minister, said.

India: Bill passed for total liquor prohibition in Mizoram

Aizawl, Mar 21 (PTI) Mizoram assembly has passed a bill to bring back total prohibition of liquor in the northeastern state after four years.

The state government decided to prohibit manufacture, import, sale and consumption of liquor for the common people for their general health and help in law enforcement, Excise and Narcotics Minister Dr K Beichhua said while introducing the bill.

Cutting across party lines, all the legislators supported the Mizoram Liquor (Prohibition) Bill, 2019 and it was passed Wednesday.

India: Mizo assembly asks Centre not to reintroduce Citizenship Bill

Aizawl, Mar 20 (PTI) The Mizoram assembly Wednesday unanimously adopted a resolution asking the Centre not to reintroduce the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill in any form in future.

The civil societies, churches, political parties and the people of the state are against the bill, Home Minister Lalchamliana said after moving the resolution.

Indian Citizenship bill: Mizoram body calls for R-Day boycott

Aizawl, Jan 22 (PTI) Mizoram's NGO Coordination Committee, an umbrella organisation of civil societies and students' bodies, has called for a boycott of the Republic Day celebrations in the state in protest against the citizenship bill, the committee's chairman Vanlalruata said.

In a press statement issued after a meeting of the NGO Coordination Committee here, it said that the Lok Sabha has passed the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 despite widespread protests.

"The bill necessitates stronger protests," it said.
