India: 3 get 20-year jail for gang rape

Gurdaspur (Punjab), Apr 9 (PTI) A Punjab court sentenced three men to 20 years of imprisonment on Tuesday for raping a 25-year-old woman in Gurdaspur district five years ago and repeating the offence for over four months by blackmailing her with a video.

The sessions court sentenced Lovepreet Singh, Harvinder Singh and Prabhjot Singh to jail after they were found guilty. Two others, Gurpinder Singh and Balwinder Singh, were declared proclaimed offenders.

India: Man rapes, kills 5-yr-old cousin sister

Ghaziabad, Apr 9 (PTI) A man was arrested on Monday for allegedly raping and killing his five-year-old cousin sister here, police said.

The minor's body was recovered from a sugarcane field near Sarana village on Monday morning, police said.

The girl was abducted from Indira Puri Colony in Murad Nagar when she was playing outside of her home, they said.

Kashmir: Curfew continues for second day in Kishtwar

Jammu, April 10 (PTI) The curfew imposed in Kishtwar district following killing of senior RSS functionary Chanderkant Sharma and his PSO remained in force for the second day Wednesday even as police intensified searches to track down those involved in the killing.

The cremation of the RSS leader will take place later in the day in Kishtwar town amid heavy security.

India: Former BJP minister Lal Singh detained en route to Kishtwar

Bhaderwah/Jammu, Apr 10 (PTI) Dogra Swabhimaan Sangthan (DSS) chief and candidate for Jammu and Udhampur Lok Sabha seats, Choudhary Lal Singh, was Wednesday detained with supporters en route to Kishtwar, officials said.

The former minister was detained in Assar area of the Doda district, the officials said.

Indian EC bans Modi biopic during election period

New Delhi, Apr 10 (PTI) The Election Commission Wednesday banned the screening of the biopic on Prime Minister Narendra Modi during poll period, saying any such film that subserves purpose of any political entity or individual should not be displayed in the electronic media.

The EC order came a day before the movie was to be released.

The first phase of Lok Sabha elections starts Thursday.

Indian Polls: Rahul Gandhi files nomination for Amethi

Amethi (UP), Apr 10 (PTI) With UPA president Sonia Gandhi and sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra by his side, Congress president Rahul Gandhi Wednesday filed his nomination papers for the Amethi Lok Sabha seat at the Collectorate here.

Rahul was also accompanied by Priyanka's husband Robert Vadra and their two children to send a message that the entire family gives much importance to the Congress bastion, party leaders said.

Muzaffarpur (Bihar), Apr 10 (PTI) A case has been lodged at a court here against former Jammu and Kashmir chief ministers Farooq Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti over their remarks that abrogating Article 370 and 35A, that grant special status to the state, will lead to its freedom from the country.

Indian SC allows Rafale leaked documents, dismisses gov objections

New Delhi, Apr 10 (PTI) In a setback to the Centre, the Supreme Court Wednesday allowed leaked documents to be relied upon by petitioners seeking review of its Rafale judgement and dismissed the government's preliminary objections claiming "privilege" over them.

The Centre had submitted that privilege documents were procured by petitioners in an illegal way and used to support their review petitions against the December 14, 2018 judgement of the apex court dismissing all pleas challenging procurement of 36 Rafale fighter jets from France.

Known as Belapati Pasi, a stone cutter, often seen sitting under Babupurwa bridge she decided to contest election for the poor's cause. 

Indian bishop charged with repeatedly raping nun

NEW DELHI (AP) — Indian authorities charged a Roman Catholic bishop on Tuesday with repeatedly raping a nun in her rural convent, a case that helped make the sexual abuse of nuns a major issue in the church.

Bishop Franco Mulakkal was charged with rape, illegal confinement and intimidation, said Hari Sankar, a district police chief in the southern state of Kerala, India’s Catholic heartland.
