MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Minneapolis agreed Friday to ban chokeholds and neck restraints by police and to require officers to try to stop any other officers they see using improper force, in the first concrete steps to remake the city’s police force since George Floyd’s death.

The changes are part of a stipulation between the city and the Minnesota Department of Human Rights, which launched a civil rights investigation this week in response to the death of Floyd. The City Council approved the agreement 12-0.

Washington, Jun 5 (PTI) Thousands of Americans carrying placards reading black lives matter and raising slogans such as no justice, no peace took to the streets in many US cities, demonstrating peacefully against the killing of unarmed African-American George Floyd by a white police officer in Minneapolis on May 25.

The 46-year-old victim, a native of Houston, was handcuffed and pinned to the ground on May 25 by a white police officer who kneeled on his neck as he gasped for breath.

Lucknow, June 4 (PTI) Around 31lakh migrant workers have returned to Uttar Pradesh through trains and other means with state road transport corporation buses alone ferrying over 2.30 lakh people in last three days, an official said on Thursday.

Additional Chief Secretary Awanish Awsathi said about 31 lakh people have come to the state by trains and other means.

Bengaluru, Jun 5 (PTI) A case has been registered against former Executive Director of human rights advocacy group Amnesty International Aakar Patel for posting an "offensive" content on social media, which allegedly sought to instigate a section of people against the government.

The case was registered on Tuesday following a complaint by the police inspector of JC Nagar police station alleging that the twitter post by Patel was "offensive."

Law enforcement officers forced protestors back before Trump walked to a nearby church for a photo op on Monday that divided the United States amid nationwide protests over police brutality.

DAMASCUS, June 5 (NNN-AGENCIES) — At least nine fighters loyal to the Syrian government, including four Syrians, were killed during Israeli air raids late Thursday in the Hama province a central region controlled by the Syrian army and Iranians, a monitor group said.

Those killed were either “part of the regime forces or (allied) Iranian forces,” the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported.

The toll of nine dead could rise as some people were seriously injured in the raids, it added.

New Delhi, Jun 3 (PTI) Student bodies across the country on Wednesday held virtual as well as symbolic protest demanding the release of activists arrested for protesting against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, even as a scheduled demonstration at the Delhi University had to be cancelled after police denied permission.

Apart from the virtual protest, some students also held symbolic protests inside JNU and Jamia Millia Islamia campuses with some students holding placards.
