India: Odisha Cong MLA resigns over Kunduli gangrape incident

Bhubaneswar, Nov 6 (PTI) Congress MLA Krishna Chandra Sagaria on Tuesday resigned as member of the Odisha Assembly, protesting "injustice" meted out to an alleged gangrape victim of Koraput district, who committed suicide earlier this year.

A 14-year-old girl in Kunduli area of Koraput district had alleged that she was gangraped by four men in uniform in October, last year. The police, however, ruled out rape, citing her medical reports.

The girl subsequently committed suicide by hanging on January 22, triggering sharp reactions from many quarters.

62 Naxals surrender before Indian police

NEW DELHI, Nov. 6 (Xinhua) -- Sixty-two Naxals surrendered to police on Tuesday in central Indian state of Chattisgarh, officials said.

The Naxals surrendered in Narayanpur district, about 223 km south of Raipur, the capital city of Chhattisgarh.

"Today 62 Naxals have shunned the path of violence and laid down arms by surrendering to police here," a police official said. "The top officials of the police were present during the function when these Naxals submitted themselves to the law."

Of the 62 Naxals, majority of them laid down their arms.

India: Three held for 'gang-rape' of woman in Telangana

Hyderabad, Nov 6 (PTI) A 25-year-old woman was allegedly sexually assaulted by three people in a house here following which they were arrested, police said Tuesday.

Under the pretext of offering some work, a man identified as Jaipal met the woman near a toddy shop Saturday night and took her to his house where she was allegedly gang-raped by him and two of his friends, they said.

Later, she lodged a complaint based on which a case of gangrape was registered and the trio was arrested Monday, they added.

India: Nullah tapping still incomplete

KANPUR: Whether it is Sisamau Nullah or Nawabganj Nullah or Ranighat Nullah, unfinished work was creating hurdles in the tapping of different nullahs (streams) falling into the Ganga River here.

The work on nullahs tapping continues to be carried despite the expiry of the first time limit of October 30. Meanwhile, the testing of Sisamau Nullah failed owing to rupture into the connection within 15 minutes.

Truck with banned polythene seized

KANPUR: A truck laden with 24 tonnes of banned polythene below 50 microns was seized within Kanpur Municipal Corporation precincts here on Monday. The total value of seized polythene has been estimated at rupees 13.50 Lakh.

Amrit Lal Nagar, the additional municipal commissioner stated that a truck laden with 24 tonnes of banned polythene was confiscated.

 

 

China to continue Iran trade despite new US sanctions

Beijing, Nov 5 (AFP) China denounced new US sanctions targeting Iran's oil and financial sectors as "long-arm jurisdiction" on Monday and vowed to continue its bilateral trade with the Islamic republic.

The measures, which took effect on Monday, follow US President Donald Trump's decision to abandon a multi-nation nuclear deal with Tehran, which he said was flawed and does not adequately constrain Iran's destabilising behaviour in the Middle East.

Russian envoy voices support for Iran amid return of U.S. sanctions

TEHRAN, Nov. 5 (Xinhua) -- Russian President Vladimir Putin's special envoy Alexander Lavrentiev arrived in the capital Tehran on Monday to express Russia's support for Iran as the U.S. fresh sanctions against the Islamic republic take effect.

In a meeting with Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council Ali Shamkhani here on Monday, Lavrentiev said that he has traveled to Tehran to "voice Moscow's unequivocal support for Iran against the fresh round of U.S. sanctions," according to Tasnim news agency.

Khashoggi killing: sons ask Saudis to return his body

Washington, Nov 5 (AFP) The sons of murdered journalist Jamal Khashoggi have asked Saudi authorities to return the body of their father so the family can properly grieve, they told CNN in an interview aired Sunday.

Khashoggi was killed inside the kingdom's consulate in Istanbul by a team sent from Riyadh on October 2, a murder Turkey's president said was ordered from "the highest levels" of Saudi Arabia's government.

N Korea welcomes Cuban president to Pyongyang

Pyongyang , Nov 4; AFP: Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel was due in Pyongyang on Sunday, North Korea's state media reported, describing the visit as a "historic event" highlighting the "invincible friendship" of the two allies.

The visit comes amid stalled talks between North Korea and the United States and only days after Washington imposed fresh economic restrictions on Cuba.

Washington's ties with Havana were fully restored in 2015 after more than half a century of enmity, but have deteriorated since President Donald Trump took office.

Turkey: Saudi investigators worked to remove evidence

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — Members of a team from Saudi Arabia sent to help Turkish authorities investigate the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi worked instead to remove evidence of the slaying, a senior Turkish official said Monday.

The official confirmed a report in Turkey’s Sabah newspaper that an 11-member team of Saudi investigators that arrived in Turkey nine days after Khashoggi was killed to take part in a joint Turkish-Saudi probe included experts on chemistry and toxicology who were reportedly charged with obfuscating the evidence.

Iran will 'proudly bypass' US sanctions: Rouhani

Tehran, Nov 5 (AFP) Iran's President Hassan Rouhani said the Islamic republic "will proudly bypass sanctions" by the United States that took effect on Monday targeting the country's oil and financial sectors.

"I announce that we will proudly bypass your illegal, unjust sanctions because it's against international regulations," Rouhani said in a televised speech.

US Supreme Court rejects net neutrality appeal

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court has ended the court fight over repealed Obama-era “net neutrality” rules that required internet providers to treat all online traffic equally.

The court on Monday rejected appeals from the telecommunications industry seeking to throw out a lower court ruling in favor of the “net neutrality” rules. The Federal Communications Commission under President Donald Trump has rolled back the rules, but the industry also wanted to wipe the court ruling off the books.
