Mauritania: President receives Hamas leader Haniyeh

22 June 2021; MEMO: Mauritania's President Mohamed Ould El-Ghazaouani received the head of the Hamas Political Bureau, Ismail Haniyeh, in the capital Nouakchott on Monday, Anadolu news agency has reported. A delegation from the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement flew to Mauretania from Morocco, where it had what was described by one commentator as a "state visit".

Mauritania army announces accidental confrontation with Morocco force

24 Dec 2020; MEMO: The Mauritanian army has announced on Wednesday an "accidental" confrontation with a Moroccan force at the northern borders of the country.

The army disclosed in a statement published on its website that one of its patrols came under fire on Tuesday night after accidentally approaching a defensive position of Moroccan forces. This occurred while the patrol was pursuing a group of smugglers in the border area near the town of Inal.

Mauritania votes in lansmark election

22 June 2019; DW: Voters in the Islamic Republic of Mauritania went to the polls on Saturday to elect a new president as Mohammed Ould Abdel Aziz prepares to step aside after serving two five-year elected terms.

Some 1.5 million people in the West African state are entitled to vote in the presidential election. Preliminary results are expected at the start of next week.

49 AU members have signed free trade pact: AU chairperson

NOUAKCHOTT, Mauritania, July 2 (Xinhua) -- Forty-nine members of the African Union have signed the African continental free trade area (AfCFTA) agreement, said AU chairperson Paul Kagame on Monday.

Kagame, who is also the Rwandan president, made the announcement in Nouakchott during the closing ceremony of the 31st summit of the 55-member African Union.

South Africa, Sierra Leone, Namibia, Lesotho and Burundi signed the AfCFTA in Nouakchott. Chad and Swaziland ratified the agreement, which brings the total number of ratification to six.
