Philippines protests Beijing's 'provocative acts' in South China Sea

MANILA, Oct 20 (Reuters) - The Philippines has issued a diplomatic protest over Chinese vessels challenging its ships patrolling the South China Sea with sirens, horns and radio communications, its foreign ministry said on Wednesday.

Tensions between Manila and Beijing have been simmering for years in the strategic waterway where both countries have territorial claims.

"These provocative acts threaten the peace, good order, and security of the South China Sea and run contrary to China's obligations under international law," the foreign ministry said on Twitter.

Philippine Nobel winner Ressa calls Facebook 'biased against facts'

MANILA, Oct 9 (Reuters) - Nobel Peace Prize winner Maria Ressa used her new prominence to criticise Facebook as a threat to democracy, saying the social media giant fails to protect against the spread of hate and disinformation and is "biased against facts".

The veteran journalist and head of Philippine news site Rappler told Reuters in an interview after winning the award that Facebook's algorithms "prioritise the spread of lies laced with anger and hate over facts."

Philippine vice president Robredo files candidacy for presidential election

MANILA, Oct. 7 (Xinhua) -- Philippine Vice President Maria Leonor Robredo on Thursday filed her certificate of candidacy hours after she officially announced that she will run for president in the May 2022 elections.

Robredo, 56, submitted her certificate to the Commission on Elections with her daughters and left the poll body without telling the media who her running-mate will be.

"I will fight. We will fight. I offer myself as a candidate for the presidency in the 2022 elections," Robredo said in a news conference earlier.

Manila City Mayor Officially Joins Philippine Presidential Race

MANILA, Oct 4 (NNN-PNA) – Manila City Mayor, Francisco Domagoso, today filed his certificate of candidacy, to run for the next president of the Philippines, in the May, 2022 elections.

Domagoso, 46, popularly known by his celebrity nickname Isko Moreno, filed with his running-mate Willie Ong, their certificates of candidacy at the Commission on Elections.

The mayor of the Philippine capital will run under the political party, Aksyon Demokratiko, of which he is the president.

Domagoso appealed to the Filipinos to support his quest to serve them.

MANILA, Oct 3 (Reuters) - Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte's daughter will run for president in the 2022 election and her father's long-time aide, who has filed his vice presidential candidacy, will be her running mate, ABS-CBN news reported late on Saturday.

Sara Duterte-Carpio is currently mayor of Davao, the Philippines' third-largest city, and on Saturday filed her candidacy to run again for mayor. She has previously said she would not run for national office next year.

Troops kill 4 rebels in central Philippines

MANILA, Sept. 30 (Xinhua) -- Philippine troops killed four rebels in a clash in the central Philippine Negros Occidental province on Thursday, a military report said.

According to the report, the four New People's Army (NPA) rebels were killed in a 30-minute fighting that broke out around 2:00 a.m. local time in Manapla town.

No soldiers were wounded or killed in the clash, the report added.

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte restarted the talks to end the decades-old insurgency when he came to power in 2016, but the negotiations faltered.

China, Philippines To Deepen Cooperation On Fighting Transnational Crime

MANILA, Sept 28 (NNN-PNA) – The Chinese Embassy in Manila said today that, China and the Philippines have agreed to strengthen cooperation, to combat transnational crimes, including cross-border gambling, kidnapping, and telecommunications fraud.

An embassy spokesperson said, the two governments reached an agreement during a recent video conference between China’s Ministry of Public Security and the Philippine National Police (PNP).
