DHAKA, Bangladesh, Oct 15 (NNN-XINHUA) – The three-day “Digital Device and Innovation Expo 2019” kicked off in Bangladeshi capital Dhaka on Monday.

The exhibition is being held at the Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC), also known as Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre, in Dhaka.

Organisers said, the exhibition is mainly highlighting the successful journey of 10 years of Digital Bangladesh.

DHAKA, Oct 12 (NNN-BSS) – The Bangladeshi government has confirmed another 12 deaths from dengue fever, bringing the total number of fatalities in the country, since Jan, to 93.

According to a report of the country’s Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), received Friday, the deaths include two in Apr, six in June, 34 in July, 47 in Aug and 4 in Sept.

DHAKA, Oct 10 (NNN-BSS) – Bangladesh slipped two positions to rank 105th, out of 141 surveyed economies, in the 2019 annual global competitiveness.

A leading Bangladeshi think-tank, the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD), unveiled the report, on behalf of the Geneva-based World Economic Forum (WEF), at a press briefing in Dhaka on Wednesday.

Last year Bangladesh was ranked 103rd, in the annual Global Competitiveness Index (GCI) compiled by WEF.

Among 141 economies of the world, Singapore ranked top in 2019, by crossing the United States, which was in top in 2018.

DHAKA, Sept 26 (NNN-XINHUA) – Bangladesh’s leading Eastern Bank Limited (EBL), is all set to open its representative office in China’s Guangzhou province, according to the bank’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Ali Reza Iftekhar.

He said, the bank is expanding its footprint in Southeast Asia with its sights set on Guangzhou, in China’s south, as the second largest world economy is an important market, with many development initiatives like Belt and Road Initiative and Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB).

DHAKA, Bangladesh, Aug 28 (NNN-BSS) – Bangladeshi Foreign Minister, AK Abdul Momen, said the government successfully reduced the poverty rate by 50 percent, in the last 10 years.

“Bangladesh is one of the two countries in the world, where poverty rate has declined the most,” Momen was quoted as saying, in a report on Tuesday.

Momen made the remarks, while speaking at a programme in Dhaka, marking the country’s National Mourning Day, and 44th martyrdom anniversary of the Father of the Bangladeshi Nation, Bangabandhu, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

COX’S BAZAR, Bangladesh (AP) — Thousands of angry and frustrated Rohingya refugees marked the second anniversary of their exodus from Myanmar into Bangladesh on Sunday by demanding their citizenship and other rights in the country they fled from.

The event came days after Bangladesh with the help of the U.N. refugee agency attempted to start the repatriation of 3,450 Rohingya Muslims but none agreed to go back voluntarily. Myanmar had scheduled Aug. 22 for the beginning of the process but it failed for a second time after the first attempt last November.

COX’S BAZAR, Bangladesh (AP) — None of the thousands of Rohingya Muslims living in crowded refugee camps in Bangladesh turned up for a planned repatriation to Myanmar on Thursday, demanding they first be guaranteed safety and citizenship.

“Not a single Rohingya wants to go back without their demands being met,” Bangladesh refugee commissioner Abul Kalam told reporters.

COX’S BAZAR, Bangladesh (AP) — The repatriation of hundreds of Rohingya Muslims appeared unlikely to proceed as planned Thursday after those who were eligible told the U.N. refugee agency and the Bangladesh government they didn’t want to return to Myanmar unless their citizenship and safety were ensured.

“We have not found anybody yet who has agreed to go back, but all our preparations are in place,” said Khaled Hossain, a senior official with the Refugee, Relief and Rehabilitation commissioner’s office.
